Can You get Pregnant with an IUD?

Most doctors recommend getting the IUD removed, huh? Well forget them. They can remove the fetus I obviously don't want, otherwise I wouldn't be wearing the damn IUD in the first place, now would I?

Got the 10 year copper one placed two months ago and it's wonderful not having to remember the pill every single day. Cramping and bleeding are no worse than norm for me since I was always a heavy for several days. If I skip months completely in the years to come, so be it. Irregularity is a small price to pay for the convenience.

It's about a 1% chance I'll gamble with that chance, and if pregnancy occurs, I'm aborting. Simple as that, no matter how it has to get done.

I got pregnant with my youngest 14 years ago with an IUD fitted. I had thought I was pregnant three months earlier. I had a very late, extremely heavy period so I went to family planning to have my coil checked, The doctor said it was fine and in place, that he doubted I was pregnant. I'm five weeks late for my period. I have had a Mirena IUD for almost two years, and have always had periods monthly. The only thing that happened to me was thick brown discharge with tissue for two days back three weeks ago, which I never had before. I always spot after intercourse also and I just got back with my boyfriend this past weekend. We had sex three times and I never spotted, which is so weird, because I always do.

Just to mention also, my strings have been missing since they were put in, I never know if it is in and after major surgery of stomach, intestines, hernia, esophagus in June. I am wondering if maybe it moved. Guess I will see.

The IUD failed twice for me: once in November 2010 and once in May 2012. The first time I felt the strings the entire time, even up to the day I figured out I was pregnant. The second time, I felt the strings up to two days before the pregnancy test but not the day I figured it out.

Both IUDs were removed and resulted in two healthy pregnancies with no complications whatsoever. Needless to say, my husband just got the snip snip.

For those who say they got a negative result on pregnancy test, it does not mean you are not pregnant!

I had a copper IUD in place after the birth of my second child. We had always been able to feel the strings and everything was normal as far as periods go. Then I had a bit of abnormality 10 months after the IUD was put in place, took a test (or three) and got a negative result. So I was having a check up at the doctor's office, and mentioned this as well, so on top of the other tests, a HCG blood test was ordered just to make sure (home pregnancy tests are usually very accurate, apparently, these days). So I went and got all my tests done and everything was great, but I was told to sit down, I was pregnant and from the levels, about 10 weeks.

An ultrasound was done and the IUD was in place, although it had slightly moved down (they could not say if this had been the situation for a bit or if the uterus had pushed it down). It was removed later that week.

The pregnancy has progressed as normal, and the baby is developing as expected. I have had no other problems and am expecting the arrival of our third any time now.

I've had my IUD for 13 months now. I got it after I had my daughter. I know that it's common to have your period become light and then stop. I'm scared. I've had the copper coil for eight years with no problems and regular periods. However, 10 days after my last period, I experienced cramping and spotting five days on. The cramping comes and goes with bleeding, and bleeding worse with exercise. I'm getting bad headaches (but may be due to worry). The blood is often pinkish red and some times I wipe brown, watery stuff (sorry for details). The home pregnancy test was negative, so if I'm not pregnant, what is it?

I'm sorry but those who want to have an abortion are wrong. I have three kids 5, 4 and 2, and am pregnant again.

I don't want to go through this but I will never have an abortion. I've had the IUD for two years and am pregnant. If you don't want your baby, don't get an abortion. Give it up for adoption because there are people who can't have a baby.

I just found out today I am seven weeks pregnant and had the Peragaurd IUD. It was inserted 11 months ago and removed today after my pregnancy was confirmed. I think it is a lot more common than it is made out to be.

Some basic info: I had my iud for two years now, and my period goes like this: the first day- cramps; moderate period day 2; heavy day three; moderate day 4; light to just about gone day 5. By the end of the day gone. My last period was early February.

I have had a copper IUD for three years. I don't remember having a heavy period in December. It was very light, if anything, then through January, I started with pain in my hips and it felt like an elastic band was around my stomach, my breasts were swollen, but didn't think much of it. Well, two weeks ago, I had a brown discharge for one day, which I've never had before, then two days later, I started to bleed very heavy with little clots. I felt very tired and dizzy. The bleeding eased off after about four days and then as soon as I did anything strenuous, I would bleed again. I was booked in for a smear so I went as I had stopped spotting two days before.

The nurse who did my pap smear said my cervix looks healthy and she could see the strings to my IUD. I told her about what had happened and said it could have possibly been that I was pregnant.

I went to the GP today to have my IUD removed and she couldn't find it. The strings are not there. She has said that I need to go for a scan to see if the IUD has expelled or gone up. I don't think it could have expelled when I had the heavy bleeding because the nurse saw the strings when the bleeding had subsided. She said I might have to wait up to three weeks for the scan and I'm a nervous wreck. If anybody else has had this happen, it would be helpful to hear about what the outcome was.

Yes, you can get pregnant with an IUD! Even though there are a lot of posts here, no it doesn't happen often. If you find out early and the IUD strings are visible, you can get it taken out with a small increase of the chance of miscarriage in the few weeks after the IUD is removed.

Ive had my copper iud for almost a year now. And my period has been regular if not on the heavier side. For the past three days i have been having sharp cramps and backaches. i have been dismissing it as normal since the IUD is still settling, but having read the above statistics, i am worried i may be pregnant, even though i can still feel the string. i will have a home test as soon i knock off.

here is my story. in may i started bleeding again two weeks after my period, so i just thought maybe my body is changing or i counted wrong. well, the cramps were so bad i could not walk. i went to the hospital and boom ! also just to let everyone know that once you get pregnant with an IUD you are 80 percent more likely to have it happen again. i did not know this until yesterday. my first IUD i had for two years and this one four months. I'm getting my tubes tied at this point!

wow. I have my iud since march 06. It's due to be taken out march 2011, but I just spotted on my last period, which was in early september, so I thought it was my period. Didn't think twice about it until lately, I have been so tired, my breast/nipples hurt, my stomach hurts and cramps sometimes, I am having crazy cravings ( I was eating pickles and mustard the other day. What?), going to the restroom more often. I took a test about a week ago, and it was negative, but my friends want me to take another one. I don't know. I mean, I would be very happy to welcome a third baby, but I'm so scared of the risks that come with the iud and pregnancy together. Should I take another test? Should I be worried if I am indeed pregnant? I just don't want anything to happen to my baby if I am pregnant.

an iud, depending on which one you get can, sometimes cause strange abnormalities regarding pregnancy. My doctor told me the minute i feel pregnant come in and do a pregnancy test or do one anyway and call her with the symptoms.

I know that your mind can also trick your body in believing you are pregnant. I've had mine for like almost a year now without any problems and my boyfriend is very infertile so for this to happen, it would be bad, but at the same time a miracle, considering our situation.

I have a copper IUD because i have depression and other sorts of problems. My doctor recommended it because it has no hormones. I don't think it would harm the baby any different than a hormonal iud. The only difference between the two is that the hormonal iud might cause mental issues to become worse.

Calm down! I have had my copper iud (paragard) for four years. I have missed my period for one or two months several times. I get food cravings, but what person doesn’t? None of this means I’m pregnant. It never crosses my mind because i trust my iud!

Just a little fun fact: an iud is 99 percent effective so that means fewer than one out if 100 women would get pregnant every year. The chances are slim to none but if you just happen to be in that 1 percent, enjoy your gift of life -- it was just simply meant to be.

Ladies, from what I see, I am able to tell that we all don't want to be pregnant again. My only one pregnancy happened to be with twins, which only one survived. My son is five now and I just changed my IUD to a 10 year one. I never a had a problem, did not have periods, only cramps, never gained weight other that when I didn't exercise. The IUD I had was minerva and it had hormones, and the one I just got replaced does not.

I have noticed I am a lot more calm, cool and collected. I do have periods now, but I believe that is healthier to have one and cleanse our bodies that not get one at all.

I believe that this method is the most effective on the market and it doesn't cause side effects. I still take pregnancy tests randomly but nothing to be concerned about.

I am planning on having a second child, but when I feel ready again. For now, as far as I am concerned, it will remain with me.

i have had my iud for aver 3 years and now i can't feel my thread. should i be worried?

I had my IUD put in after I had an abortion in February. I am on the paragard so I know I have a period every month. Well I was three weeks late so I took a pregnancy test and it was positive. So I am now seven weeks and three days pregnant and when I went to the doctor, they could not see my strings, and could not pull out my IUD. They used an ultrasound machine and still no luck.

Now they are having me come back in to see if they can locate the IUD because they lost it when they were trying to pull it out. I am very scared and know the miscarriage rate is very high. I have cramps and some light spotting, but nothing else. If you are thinking about the IUD, think really hard, because what I went threw at the doctor's office was hell and I would not recommend that pain for anyone.

I just got the iud less then a month ago. should I still be using a condom for the first couple of months?

My husband and I got pregnant after having the copper IUD for three years. It is possible, ladies! Unfortunately, the process of removing the IUD, trying to increase the baby's chances, caused a miscarriage. That's not to say that it definitely will, though.

If you're pregnant with an IUD, it should be removed as soon as possible, because leaving it in causes a 50 percent chance of having a septic miscarriage in the second and third trimesters, which is potentially deadly for both mommy and baby!

We're heartbroken at the loss of our little sweetheart, but we both understand that we tried to give him/her the best chance we could, and it was easier for him to go be with God now, rather than dying septically at five or six months pregnant. Good luck and God bless all of you ladies.

P.S. To the rude poster: It's unfair to accuse these ladies of having "indiscriminate sex". You have no idea what their relationship status is, so to make that assumption is just being hateful. A doctor won't usually even put an IUD in place unless you're in a monogamous relationship because of the increased risk for PID.

I know from experience that what they're going through is scary, so please, if you don't have any comfort or helpful information to offer, keep your judgements to yourself.

Two months ago i thought i had my period, but it was only spotting. From then there was no actual period that came. After waiting three weeks (which is unusual, while on iud. it's the first time I've had regular periods), i took a pregnancy test and that turned out negative. From then every day i have pregnancy symptoms and i know this from multiple pregnancies: six to be exact.

I had strong sharp pains in the first month i missed. Now I'm growing a pregnant belly and having cravings. I'm tired all the time too, which is the biggest giveaway, since i need folic acid tablets during every pregnancy. I hope i find out in time if i am pregnant because if so, we would be very happy.

I had suspected I was pregnant and took a home test that came out negative and then went in for a blood test that also came back negative. I had a history of fibroids and was told to consult with a specialist to have the fibroid removed as I was starting to have a belly bulge.

My iud (mirena) has worked itself low (confirmed via ultrasounds) and recently I had sex and the condom broke because of the strings sticking out way farther than normal. I am late for my period but do not know whether that is because of the hormones making my period irregular or if I am pregnant. Like someone said, take a pregnancy test. Or go to the doctor and have them give you a pregnancy test. That's what I'm going to do. I just started showing symptoms and I have the IUD but I don't really think I am pregnant. but better safe than sorry.

For anon77375: a condom is far from safe, as they are always known to split, especially for me and my partner. Even family planning clinics tell you that they are not as safe as people make out.

The whole reason for getting the coil fitted was so you can have sex with your partner without having to worry about using a condom and having even more of a risk of getting pregnant.

Girls, there's an easy solution to not getting pregnant while on the IUD. Stop having unprotected, indiscriminate sex! If you don't want to get pregnant, take the precautions. That's IUD, plus a condom.
