The answer to this question is: it depends. Some toothpastes contain ingredients which can help get rid of pimples, while others do not, and in some cases they can actually irritate the skin. Given that there are numerous other acne remedies available, toothpaste should really only be viewed as a last resort. It also usually requires an overnight treatment to work effectively, so don't depend on toothpaste for emergent zit crises.

There are two ways in which toothpaste can work to get rid of pimples. In the first sense, toothpaste can act like a mask, drawing impurities out of the skin; it may also dry the skin slightly as it does so, which can reduce the size of a pimple. In addition, some toothpastes contain menthol or alcohol, two compounds which can dry the skin, although they can make your skin too dry, which is not desired.

If you want to use toothpaste to get rid of pimples, look for a true toothpaste, not a gel, and if you can, find one with minimal additives. Natural or organic toothpastes are a good bet, since they usually have a short ingredient list. Apply a small dab to the acne spot in question, leave it on overnight, and rinse in the morning. Your mileage may vary, depending on the toothpaste, your skin type, and the pimple.

If you want to get rid of pimples, there are a number of home remedies as well as over the counter medications which can help; if you have a severe case which has developed into acne, you may want to consult a doctor for stronger medications. Avoid popping pimples, no matter how tempting it is, because you can actually make the situation worse by causing a deep infection. If a pimple gets truly upsetting for you, head to a cosmetician who specializes in extractions; he or she has received special training in handling pimples, blackheads, and other blemishes. A dermatologist may also be willing to pop it for you.

Some home remedies to get rid of pimples include aspirin, which can be ground into a paste with water and applied overnight, as well as applications of lime or lemon juice and potato wedges. Over the counter medications can also be used to target trouble spots. More importantly, keep your face clean and grease-free, and use water based moisturizers for your skin care to help avoid the development of pimples in the first place.

How to get rid of razor bumps is a big question that I hate! I have a tool that can get rid of them fast coming out soon.

Razor bumps occur when a newly shorn hair grows back to re-enter the skin. As it continues to pierce and embed itself into the skin, a bump will appear as a sign of injury.

To get rid of razor bumps rapidly, keep the part free of sweat and germs. Wash the regarded area with antibacterial cleanser. Development of bacterium can exacerbate the precondition and prevents skin’s power to reclaim the bumps.

I used normal Colgate paste. I first applied and left it for about 50 minutes, but it didn't work. Nothing happened. The pimple is just as clear as day. I repeated it, but this time left it overnight with same result and ice also had no effect. I think I am going to pop!

I've been using Crest Pro Health for three stubborn pimples on my chin area. It worked like a charm! I was kind of surprised because toothpaste has never worked for me before. I keep it on for a little bit and then wash clean. I then use my face cleanser, so my face doesn't dry out.

So I just got a pimple right on my forehead and it's huge! It's my first one in a long time and I tried a lot of things to make it go away.

This is what I tried. First, I put honey on my face and it worked a little. Second, I used ice. It kind of worked but only dabbed it for 20-30 seconds

and finally third, I used these ingredients for a face mask. It's a home remedy. I used an egg yolk only and herbs with honey and some milk. Then I rubbed it on my skin and left it for 20 minutes, only and that's how long it should be on and when it's on your face, you can't move or else it'll leave marks on your face so you have to be still.

Anyway, good luck.

I put toothpaste on my acne a long time ago because a friend suggested it, and it left it a little dry, but not all the way and it reduced my acne. Right now I'm using a product called AcneFree and it took away all my acne! I really suggest that and also to put ice on it and a hot wash cloth always helps quicken the process and reduce the swelling and redness.

The other day I mixed four Advils with some peroxide and baking soda into a paste and it took away all my pimples and redness. It was really smooth. Just make sure that you moisturize right after you clean your face because after about an hour it will dry up so that's one of the best things.

Do not use this if you have sensitive skin. It burns. I used crest pro health gum protection but it was a waste of time. I did a mask and now my eye is swollen and it hurts terribly. I did this just for a minute and all this happened. Please don't use this toothpaste if you have sensitive skin. It ruins your face!

I use toothpaste (crest) every morning on my face as a mask. I usually let it sit on there for about 30 minutes and I know it may sound crazy but it keeps my face feeling great. My skin has this refreshing feeling after I take it off and it keeps my skin glowing and soft as ever.

I also put it on before going to bed, not as a mask but usually on just the main parts of my skin that have zits and what not and by morning my face is clear and if not, then it's very close to getting there. This all may sound crazy, but believe it or not, I have been doing this for about two weeks now and my skin has never felt or looked better. So I would really recommend it!

I don't have acne on my face but on my back, which is really embarrassing because I dance and the leotards show all my pimples! I'm trying the toothpaste thing right now. I tried it accidentally with whitening toothpaste for 10 minutes and it didn't burn at all. It did leave my skin a little red but reduced the size of my pimples. Now I'm using regular colgate toothpaste so I'll see how it works.

I did this last night because I had big pimples and I wanted to get rid of them. I put colgate whitening toothpaste on my pimples, and I have sensitive skin. When I woke up this morning, I took it off and I had something like a dry, bruised scab on my cheek. It's really big and it hurts when I smile.

Does anyone know how to get rid of it? I have paw paw ointment on it. Toothpaste doesn't help!

Don't do this toothpaste technique overnight. It has damaged my face. I woke up with a chemical burn on my face and spent loads on products trying to fix it. It's not worth it, guys. And my spot/pimple is still there, even after leaving it overnight with a band aid. I had huge scabs which were like brown and black, on my face, which took a week to heal with several trips to doctors, hospitals and phone calls to skin specialists. Now I'm left with a wrinkled under eye and a small scar on my cheek.

This was the biggest mistake ever and I so regret it. Don't make that same mistake I did.

I was looking for a way to make my large pores appear less noticeable. I tried toothpaste yesterday. I could see my pores going small soon as I applied it.

I wonder why you people keep it on for a whole night or a whole day, even for 30 minutes. I just applied it and rinsed one minute afterward. The result was smooth skin. Follow with a good moisturizer and you are done.

It's strong you don't need to put it on for a whole night. Of course it will burn if you do that.

Use it as a face wash morning and night and leave it only for 30 minutes on large pimples.

I used Colgate toothpaste and it dried out my pimples within three days of using it. Colgate seems to be very mild and soft, just a mild minty sensation on the pimple but 100 percent worked for me. I never had acne before I heard of Colgate helped my husband when he was a teenager and he passed the tip to me I'm so happy because it's embarrassing when you have to go to social meetings and your jaw has bright red pimples. It works. Don't use crest toothpaste because it irritates the skin and will make the pimples very painful.

Nice information. Eat a healthy diet. This step is often overlooked by many people but skincare experts will tell you that there is a lot of truth in the old saying that “you are what you eat”. Some good ideas for healthy eating include consuming lean healthy meats, lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and avoiding excess amounts of processed foods wherever possible.

Consider using an over-the-counter acne medications as a supplemental strategy for getting rid of pimples. A full explanation of all of the available over the counter medications for acne treatment is beyond the scope of the short article, but if you have any questions, be sure and consult with your dermatologist.

I'm a Female, normal human being, struck down with acne. I hate it, seriously. It is destroying my self-esteem!

By the way, I'm only 15, turning 16 this year. I have scars on both sides of my cheeks.

Imagine me shying away from others, but they still can see the other side of my face.

Searching web information frantically, i thought i was saved. Unknowingly, it's a online buying thing: books, etc., "Acne no more," "The last acne solution," blahblah.

Just now i just tried the toothpaste method. Mine's colgate advanced whitening, which causes a little burning at first, but now it has subsided. I hope it works!

anon175479
Post 177

so i used this treatment, toothpaste. I'm 15 years old, female, and it made my zit so much worse. it made it burn even when i touched it. therefore i could no longer put my face wash on it because it burned so much! i just stopped putting things on my face, and it went away on its own within three or four days. i did this about three weeks ago.

now I've been using a remedy that works great! my science teacher brought it up in class one day. i have two sinks in my bathroom. i fill one up with the extremely hot water, and the second one i fill with extremely cold water. i put a washcloth in both. i start with the hot sink, take the washcloth and hold it on my face, and i repeat this about six times, then move onto the cold sink and do the same. this process leaves my face feeling tight and clean. i haven't gotten bad acne since I've started this, and it's simple and you can get it at home, no products. hope you try it and it works well for you!

Okay so I've had this zit on my upper lip which really did not look nice and I had college the next day and I was afraid people were going to think it looked like herpes or something so I started freaking out.

First, I tried using a cinnamon and honey paste but that did nothing except make my skin soft.

but then i tried toothpaste and i let it be for about 30 minutes and when i went back to the toilet to wash my face, i saw that it did nothing and i was a bit disappointed. So anyway, i washed my face and gently patted the area of the zit and used a wash cloth to wipe my face gently. When i looked again the zit was completely gone!

I was searching how to get rid of pimples last night and I came across this website. I was sort of scared since half the people said that using whitening toothpaste causes scars and burns but that was all I had. So before bed I put a big dab of Colgate Total Advanced Clean plus Whitening on my pimples. It burned very slightly after about 10 minutes but honestly it didn't hurt at all. It felt good, cool and tingly.

When I woke up for school (I'm a 13 year old girl) and I wiped it off my pimples had decreased in size about halfway. Considering that I've tried so many things, this was amazing. I popped the whiteheads, rinsed my face with hot water, dried my face, then reapplied it. This time it burned and hurt much more than before. I wanted to take it off but I'd take the burn over zits any day. And if your like me and your zits won't go away, you won't care either, trust me.

It's the afternoon now and I'm about to go apply it again for about half an hour, then I'll put ice on them.

If you want to get rid of your pimples, don't be afraid to try this. It really works.

If you're afraid of burns and scars, try it on one small pimple at first and see how it goes.

I once got a large, noticeable zit beside my face, and I was going to school the next day. So, I picked at it until it popped and some white stuff oozed out of it (my mom said it was pus), and the next day, the zit was gone completely! By the way: i used colgate, a white toothpaste. Do not rub, itch, scratch, or pick at it while using toothpaste

P.S. Do not rub! Add only a dab of it on the areas where there is redness and the pimple alone.

Once again, do not rub. You will regret it, been there and trust me, it won't give you a scar but it will irritate it and make it bigger!

I tried using the toothpaste last night. I was kind of scared because I heard a lot of people saying that it makes it worse and others said that it works fantastic, so tried it last night with this zit I had on my cheek. I left the toothpaste on only for about 30 minutes because I was not so sure about leaving it on overnight.

After 30 minutes of having it on I went to rinse my face, and I was kind of amazed to see that it reduced the size of the zit, but now I wish I could go back in time and didn't do it because it actually gave me more a black and red mark, and I was pretty upset because I have many of those.

Oh yeah I used the toothpaste called Crest that has baking soda and peroxide with tartar protection and its blue. If I were you I would use it if you're broke and it's the last thing you could think of to get your acne to go away.

I hope it works on you if you tried it but please listen to me: You will be shocked in the morning by seeing a black scar which can stay there for months or years! But, oh well. Everyone has different skins and probably the way it worked for me would not work for you.

but if you don't want to use toothpaste, you can use natural yogurt as a mask and let it set 20-25 minutes. they both work! for me anyway.

I am a 12 year old girl and I have school tomorrow and I have acne on the left and right side on my chin -- a few tiny ones on both of my cheeks and some on my forehead.

I was thinking about putting toothpaste on it but I was reading about how some people said it made it bigger and it burned it and scarred it. And they say that whitening tooth paste does not work and that is the only kind that we have but it is the colgate kind.

So, I did something else that worked before : you put mayonnaise on your face for how ever long you want. I usually do this for about 30 - 45 minutes tops! And then when you are all done, wash it off with milk. So I will apply the toothpaste to a small area on my face and see what happens but if that does not work I will use the mayonnaise trick.

Post 127

First of all, it won't leave a scar. what happens if your brushing your teeth and it drips onto your chin and you don't notice and leave it there. are you going to scar? no, i don't think so!

I did this: i put ordinary toothpaste on my chin where i have the most pimples and left it on for a few hours so it hardened. i washed it off and in the morning my pimples were hardly recognisable. it's a great method. just don't use whitening toothpaste.

Do not use any type of whitening toothpaste. I wanted to try this method and hadn't read up on it enough, because I used my whitening toothpaste. It did feel like it was burning but other acne products have the same feeling sometimes so I thought it was normal.

I woke up the next morning and I have a huge scar, which I now have to wait for it to scab over. It burned my face where the pimple was, and it's much harder to cover up with concealer when it's like this. All of my friends made fun of me in school, and I'm hoping the scab will go away soon. So basically, do not use whitening toothpaste!

anon117999
Post 121

My friend uses toothpaste because she is allergic to any acidic things (like lemon juice etc.) touching her face so it's her only resort and now she hardly ever gets any bad spots! You know just a couple of small things here and there no one really cares about?

It does depend on your skin type though.

I would avoid it if you get really bad spots or have super sensitive skin. If it's just an average "Oh no it's huge!" (red but not too big) problem then feel free. Colgate and aquafresh work best but make sure it says toothpaste and not the fancy gels. Look at the ingredients, as well.

P.S. Don't cover your face in a mask of it. That can give you burns. Just cover up the spots

anon117993
Post 120

I've only tried it once but I did the completely wrong thing with it! I don't get bad spots very often, only tiny little skin coloured things on my chin. I got a few really bad ones a week ago and they won't go away! I'm going to try it and hope it works.

anon117422

I tried it. I just used normal cheap-ish toothpaste, nothing fancy or expensive. And it worked. I only had about 2-3 small spots, and I kept the toothpaste on for about 30 minutes, washed it off and went straight to bed. When I woke up and looked in the mirror, the spots were either gone or just very small! Toothpaste is a great spot remover!

I've had acne for too long, I am trying this method because I simply have nowhere else to turn. I have been trying everything.

I've also been trying the hot water and cold water method. It's when you are in a bath or shower and just before you get out of the bath, run boiling hot water through your shower and on to your face, it may be painful but you have got to be strong. Then immediately run cold water and do the same thing.

The hot water opens up your pours and cleans it, and the cold water closes it. It feels lovely and it helps your skin.

I've had acne for about nine months now. It's not severe, but i do break out quite a bit. I've been using proactiv for about six months and it doesn't seem to be working for me, so I've recently started to use (about a week ago) two products from the Seacret range, all their products are fully natural and won't irritate your skin.

It's not made fully for "acne" but it does treat your skin fully naturally, you will only need two products instead of using three from proactiv. Now I'm not saying proactiv doesn't work, it just didn't work for me. Okay so the 'secret' products I'm using are,

Enriched facial mud mask. Use it once a week or once every two days.

Purifying peeling mask. Use it every day, twice a day. This cleans your skin without making it dry, removes oils and dirt and unclogs your pores.

These products really seem to be helping my skin. I've noticed that my skin is a lot smoother and feels so much better. when i first started using it i broke out for about two days but keep using it and you will definitely see results.

Be patient and keep positive! everything you do to get rid of your acne is getting you a little bit closer to fully getting rid of your blemishes.

@Anon103827: If you have really severe acne, you might want to go to the doctor. Sometimes, antibiotics will help clear up especially bad acne.

Alternatively, go to the drugstore and get some (hydro)cortisone cream, with 2 percent cortisone. It won't completely erase the pimples overnight, but it will help them look less red and inflamed, which certainly makes them less noticeable. Good luck.

Use toothpaste with caution. It definitely can work. However, avoid using anything with whiteners in it. I would also avoid gels. A lot of the incidents of people with burns can be related back to a whitening toothpaste which tends to have peroxide in it. Hence the chemical whitener is what actually burns the skin.

Also, if you have sensitive skin I would not advise use. The best thing to do if you are considering using this method is to test the toothpaste on a small area of skin (preferably a spot that is not readily visible should a reaction occur) to see if you will have a bad reaction.

Also, do not use this as an overnight mask. It's just asking for bad results.

Please note that if you are using other acne products, be careful as you do not know how the chemicals in each will react to each other. Basically, use your common sense.

Toothpaste can work quite effectively, but the problem is it also contains things that irritate your skin further. Generally you can tell its irritating by the burning sensation it causes, though not always.

These kinds of paste will make the skin look even redder and worse than just the pimple. As such, it's best to use this method when you don't intend to be seen in public the next day - at least for the first time you try a particular toothpaste.

If you can, stick to a weaker non-gel paste (colours other than white are all gels). Once you've experimented, you'll be able to see if your toothpaste irritates your skin, and use it more effectively in future.

No! it didn't work for me, and i got a really bad rash a couple of days later. i had to go to the doctor and get all this medication. it was a nightmare! I recommend clindamycin and dove. they work on the whiteheads really well. but clindamycin you have to get from your doctor.

if you're going to use the toothpaste method (which i am right now), it's best to put the toothpaste in the middle of a bandaid and put it across the pimple or the pimples. that way the chemicals stick to the skin and does its job faster and if you go to sleep with the toothpaste on it doesn't get all over your pimple. :)

It works if you use it in 15 minute intervals or less, but once I tried it overnight and I had this horrible red, scab-like mark.

It felt like i had burned my face and it didn't go away for more than a month, even with daily applications of neosporin and scarzone.

I love it! It only burns a little. On other sites it was talking about how it can burn your skin but i highly doubt that! I put it n once in the morning, at night, and when i get home from school.

For the record: this really works. I don't get pimples very often. But when I do I get them on my nose because it's very oily. As soon as I feel it coming I put the toothpaste on all night before I go to bed. I try and wait for it to dry so I don't get it all over my pillow and sheets. This time around I was a little nervous because I thought I waited too long to put the toothpaste on, but I went ahead and did it anyway. It burned *really* bad, almost to the point that I wanted to take it off but I tolerated it. I actually put it on overnight and washed it off in the morning and reapplied and kept it on all day. To my surprise my pimple is gone. Now the downside is that my nose is peeling and dry, but I'll take that over a pimple any day, a little moisturizer and I should be fine. Oh and also I used Colgate toothpaste, not gel with baking soda and peroxide!

i've used every product for acne from Clean & Clear, Proactive, Clearasil, Oxy, i've used the acne cream the acne oil the acne lotion and non of them work. my dad says he had bad acne too and he put on lemon juice which he said stung really bad but it got rid of his acne and all. i'm not really going to use lemons yet. i'm going to use the whole toothpaste thing and see what happens. i was also using this acne product that had apitcut in it and it worked but then more pimples came :/ hope the toothpaste works!

i used my toothpaste all over my face because i have acne all over. my skin was so dry and cracked and none of my pimples went away so with my skin like this i used a&d and my skin went back to normal but I've had pimples for two years and I'm sick of it so I'm using toothpaste mixed with a&d and will see if it works.

I heard from my best friend/brother that it worked when he called me and told me, i was like, oh well, i've got a huge BBQ tomorrow. i guess i'll try it. i put some on overnight and i woke up and it was like *magic*! I used Crest Pro-Health.

Toothpaste does work. If you sleep with tooth paste on your face it will peel the skin. Otherwise don't sleep with toothpaste on your face. If your acne is bad try to do the toothpaste treatment once a day to get your zit or pimple clear.

I've used toothpaste in the past and it worked, however once i fell asleep with it on and i had horrible results. My face was burning and my skin remained dry and it peeled for a few days. I wouldn't recommend overnight treatment unless you have weak toothpaste.

My friend uses toothpaste to get rid of his pimples but i don't know if i should use it and on google it says toothpaste is the last resort to use. But i tried it anyways and it actually works it doesn't make your skin dry and it is safe 100%! The best toothpaste is aquafresh it works the best and the fastest. :]

Toothpaste has always worked for me! Use the white paste kind of toothpaste - nothing fancy or expensive, and definitely not gel. Put a little on your pimple and it dries it up really fast. The worst part about it is that you'll get toothpaste on your pillow if you do this right before bed, but that is a small price to pay to be zit-less the next day!
