@sunnyskys - I'm glad to hear you're going to give the overlocker another chance because it really does look nicer and gives you more options. There are certain fabrics that are very difficult to sew with a regular sewing machine. For example, knit and spandex fabrics are much easier to sew on a serger.
One thing to keep in mind is the overlock stitch technique isn't as forgiving of mistakes. If you sew your seam in the wrong spot using a regular sewing machine you can just rip it out and try again. The serger trims the fabric as it goes so if you make a mistake on the serger you could ruin the whole garment.
