What Should I do if I Drop my Cell Phone in Water?

J.Gunsch
J.Gunsch

If you drop your cell phone in water, it is often possible to salvage it. Time is of the essence, however, so the first thing to do is to get your cell phone out of the water as soon as possible. Leaving a cell phone in water for even a few seconds might damage it beyond repair, but there are a few things that you can try and that sometimes work. The main things are opening the phone as much as possible, taking out the battery and completely drying off all of the components.

Remove the Battery

After removing the cell phone from water, it is important to disassemble the cell phone so that all parts can dry separately.
After removing the cell phone from water, it is important to disassemble the cell phone so that all parts can dry separately.

After retrieving your cell phone from the water, the next thing to do is to remove the battery immediately, without even hesitating to turn off the power. This reduces the risk of a short circuit that would render your phone useless. Dry the battery with a towel, and it set aside to dry thoroughly. The battery itself might not work again, but it can be replaced fairly inexpensively. Even if the battery does work, it is a good idea to get a new one to avoid the risk of having the old one leak battery acid.

Take It Apart

Cell phones that have been in water should be placed in a bowl of rice, which will absorb water from the phone.
Cell phones that have been in water should be placed in a bowl of rice, which will absorb water from the phone.

After you have removed the battery, dry off the cell phone with an absorbent towel as best as you can. Use cotton swabs to soak up water in crevices and on any fragile, exposed circuits. If you have dropped your cell phone in water, it also is helpful to disassemble it, if you can, and let all of the parts dry separately. Just be sure that you know how to put it back together. If it is a flip or sliding cell phone, leave it open to allow for maximum evaporation.

Avoid Mineral Damage

Remove the battery immediately after retrieving a cell phone from water.

If you drop your cell phone in water that isn't pure or another liquid, such as a beverage or in salt water, rinse off the phone with fresh water after you have removed the battery. After you drop your cell phone in water, a quick rinsing is unlikely to do any further damage, but salt, sugar or other materials might. You also could try giving your phone an alcohol bath. The alcohol will displace minerals and microscopic substances and will aid in the evaporation of the fluid. If it is available, you should use an alcohol concentration of 95 percent rather than rubbing alcohol, which usually has a concentration of 70 percent.

Let It Dry

Cotton swabs may be used to soak up water from a cell phone that has been dropped in water.

After your phone is clean, leave it in a warm, dry area or near an air conditioner for at least three days before you attempt to replace the battery and turn it on. This is very important, because although you may think that you have thoroughly dried it, the slightest moisture can react with the battery and cause it to short circuit. Putting your cell phone in a container full of dry rice grains also can help dry it out. Make sure that the rice completely covers the phone.

Warranty Likely Voided

Phones dropped in salt water should be rinsed in fresh water after the battery is removed.

Unless you have insurance for your cell phone and it covers water damage, there probably is no point in sending it to the manufacturer with the hope that the warranty will cover the cost of a replacement. If you drop your cell phone in water, the warranty probably will be voided. The manufacturer's technicians will be able to tell immediately that it has been dropped in water because of the moisture-sensitive stickers that are placed inside almost all cell phones. The best thing to do is to dry it out yourself and hope that it still works.

i spilled ice tea in my bag which had my phone inside (lg rumor2). the screen is grey and black and the red light at the top is constantly on and never turns off. what do i do? please help!

My phone fell from my shallow jeans pocket into the toilet! It took about three seconds to register in my brain, then I quickly retrieved it.

I immediately opened it and removed the battery, drying everything carefully with bathroom tissue -- much easier to work with than a thick towel. Ignorantly, I put the battery back in to check it and it seemed to be working fine. As I walked down the hall and told my husband, I looked down and it wasn't working now.

I removed the battery again and put it all in a bag of brown rice. But I couldn't stand to wait 72 hours, so we checked it after 24. My son reassembled it and, hurray! it works fine. So thankful, because I cannot afford a new phone right now!

i went wakeboarding with my old original rumor in my shorts and luckily when i got out it was still there and we just took the battery out and left it for the day while we were at the lake in the sun and then i put the battery back in charged it up and it worked perfectly. and then i accidentally did the exact same performance again but it still works perfect and it has gone through the wash numerous times. this phone is indestructible

OK well i have the samsung rouge and before i went to bed i put my phone on the dresser and there was a cup of water and it spilled on the table during the night. The next day i tried turning it on and it wouldn't turn on and i plugged it in to the charger and it would turn on and off sometimes and the screen was messed up.

Two days later, i came home and put it in rice and i plugged it in and it comes on but the call button and end button randomly blink and the power button does not work. What should i do? Will my phone even work again?

anon141578

My LG neon went through the wash, and I dried it out on the radiator, and it works, but now, sometimes, when i slide the keypad out to text, it just turns off and on over again and it doesn't charge right anymore

anon141235

All right. Today i was taking a bath when i dropped my phone in it. (yes us teens do things like this.) I snatched it up right after it broke surface into the water. I dried with towel; it freezes up. in bag of rice now.

I had a samsung flip phone go through the washer three times and the dryer about four. it worked perfectly fine after i dried it in the sun for two days.

While I'm waiting for my phone to dry in rice am I able to activate my old phone so I have a phone until it's dry in 2-3 days?

I was at a party and I dropped my new Droid Incredible in the clean toilet and took it out immediately. Took apart the phone, dried the battery and phone with towel and naively turned it on. It flickered a little so I took the battery out again and redried. Put it back in and it turned on but couldn't get the screen to move so I turned it off (but kept battery in hoping it was OK for 20 min).

After I left the party, I turned it on. It worked. I could move the screen and even checked email but the two of the bottom lights (for search and menu) were dim. I put the phone in sleep mode and then tried to engage again. It stayed black. I took the battery out, got home and immediately found this site and put the phone and battery in rice.

The phone's red x's are still very visible, very little bleeding, I'm not sure if that won't indicate the damage.

Will the indicator sticker go back to original state after it dries? Should I go ahead and exchange the phone? (I do have insurance, but will try not to go there). Thanks!

anon138351

I have an lg pop and it was under my pillow and the bedding got taken off and my phone slipped in the pillow case and it was in the washer for five minutes. I put it in some pasta. it was sort of working and I'm in the middle of putting it in a bag of rice and putting the rice in the fridge.

i dropped my phone in the toilet and took it out within 15 seconds and later wiped it and put the battery back and started working. later after an hour it suddenly got switched off. please suggest an answer.

Incredible submerged in water for two seconds experience.

I was washing dishes and tried answering the phone while keeping those dishes coming. I tried to answer, the phone slipped, and fell in the sink (the side with dishes in queue) completely submerged underwater.

I instantly grabbed the phone out from the water, turned it off and took out the battery. I put the phone and battery in a large bowl with rice.

Let the phone and battery sit in the rice for about 24 hours. The next day, inserted the battery, turned the phone and, and was fine. Hope this brings those incredible users with similar experiences some kind of relief.

i have a samsung reclaim and i was riding in my relative's jeep. my phone was in my pocket and i got out and went home. when i got home i couldn't find my phone anywhere, so the next day i asked him to check if it had fallen out in his jeep. it had rained that night and he had left the top off of his jeep with my phone in it. i got my phone and let it dry with the battery out for around a day and a half. everything works fine except my camera. this happened around three months ago and it is really bad not to have a camera. Anything i can do?

anon136055

My issue is I dropped my phone in a cup of water sometime overnight (for sure between 1 and 8 this morning) and I don't know how long it was in there for but it was only halfway submerged. Is it save-able?

anon135247

My story of hope. My LG Rumor Touch phone dropped in the toilet accidentally while i was at the laundry (it just happened to be in my back pocket which it is normally not). When it dropped, the back cover disassembled. Quickly, i snatched the phone out and pressed the screen which it worked and then i removed the battery and wiped it off, slid open the key pad and knocked the water out.

i left it off for like 3 mins then turned it on to see if it worked and it did, except my volume wasn't as loud, so i sent a text that worked, and i made a call but could barely hear the person on the other line.

i then turned the phone off for 30 mins. When i turned it on, i pressed the volume up button but then that box kept popping up and then five minutes after other stuff kept popping up so i kept turning it off and taking out the battery and turning it back on.

when i reached home about an hour later, i placed my blow dryer on cool and blew dry the inside until my camera glass wasn't fogged anymore. My volume is now back to normal and the phone still works perfectly. Right now i just have it in front of the fan just in case blowing out the charger part. It hasn't touched rice yet. If it gets worse overnight, I'll reconsider the rice.

Okay, so, last night I had a cup of water by the bed. My phone stays with me at night. I wake up and something is in my cup of water. You guessed it, my phone. I freaked out! It was like 1:00 and it had been in the cup of water for around an hour. It has water behind the front screen and the main screen. It still works, but it's a loaner and I have to take it back tomorrow. What do I do? Can I get the water out fast? Is there a way? Help, me, please!

I was tech support for T-Mobile.

Funny story: a guy called and said his phone wasn't working, and we needed to replace it since it was in warranty. I explained we needed to troubleshoot it first.

He stated that he dropped his phone in the toilet and then put it in the oven to dry it. Now it’s melted all over the bottom of the oven. We should replace it since it is under warranty. People do silly things.

If your phone gets wet do not turn it on until it’s dry. Completely dry! OK you waited and now turned it on, it doesn’t work and it is still under warranty. Call tech support, but do not tell them it got wet. Explain it won't turn on and you have tried another battery and it still didn’t work.

Before you return it, remove the cover and pour rubbing alcohol in it. Allow it to dry again -- completely. By then you should have your new phone and return box. Call them. Explain that you already mailed the phone but now you're worried, you just wanted to make sure you don't get charged.

You know that nothing happened to it but you don't have the money to pay off a huge debt and you are worried. Times for you are really tough. (lay the tough times on thick) If they are going to charge you, they should send it back to you and you will return the new phone. Make sure that they agree to returning it, and write down the person's name and date / time.

Now mail the phone back. 90 percent of the time, it never gets flagged as water damage, and they told you they would return it if you got charged so if something happens and you get charged then you can argue about it.

Is it dishonest? yes. Does it work? yes. You decide.

OK, so I had just rinsed out the bath-tub after giving my dog a bath. The water was all basically gone, however there was a little residue.

My phone fell from my shirt pocket into the bathtub. (It's a slide Impression.) As soon as it dropped, the back, the battery, and the phone all split from each other. I quickly grabbed all three pieces, wiping them off immediately. I set them all out to dry for more than possibly three to four hours.

I attempted to turn it on, but it kept freezing and turning off on its own. I then put my phone and its pieces in a bag of rice. (Used as a remedy to soak the water out.) Still, my phone doesn't work.

What do I do or any suggestions, please?

anon132688

This is a message of hope. I have a My Touch 3G Slide that fell out of my back pocket into a toilet with urine. You can be sure I will never have my beloved phone near any liquid for as long as I have it from now on!

I took it out immediately and did the stupid trying to turn on the phone which of course it didn't. I dried off the outside of the phone but I didn't remove the battery immediately, but rather 30 minutes later because I didn't know better at the time.

I wiped off my phone and it dried in the sun for several hours. That night I submerged it in an open baggy of rice and left it in for exactly 72 hours. My phone is working like normal now.

I am keeping my fingers crossed it will last but from the way the phone looks and is functioning it is as though nothing happened.

anon132589

This is great! I dropped my phone in the toilet. I immediately took out the covering and battery. I put the phone in front of a fan for a like a day, I got some rice I put my phone in the rice for like a day and a half. So I left my phone off for like 2.5 days, and lo and behold, it turned back on and works just fine. (Samsung Glyde)

I was in the in the bathroom texting. I went to brush my teeth and put my phone by the sink. I then turned off the tap, my elbow knocked my nokia phone straight into the bath! so, i was going to the bathroom, and my phone was in my back pocket, and I dropped my phone in the toilet! Ugh! It was in there for one minute at least. And so I took it out blew dry it, and let it dry for two days! I turned it on the third day, and in the background you can see the water. how do i get rid of that?

OK i was boating and when i went to go tie up the boat my phone fell out of my bra (yes i keep my phone in my bra lol). It fell right in to the lake i snatched it out took the battery out dried it off and the phone and put everything in to a bag of rice left it there for seven hours, put it back together and everything worked fine. So I'm telling you rice works.

anon129481

About 10 minutes ago, i was getting ready to go to the bathroom, and my EnV3 was in my back pocket, when i went to sit down, it fell out of my pocket, and into the toilet. I quickly grabbed it and took out the battery and started to dry off the battery, and the phone, once i did that, i ran into my mom's room and started drying out the phone with the dryer [high power in between cool and warm] i thought i got it completely dry, then i put the batter back in and tried turning it on, and it started to vibrate, not like getting a text, but like a low buzzing sound. and then I'm pretty sure i heard a small sizzling sound.

i freaked out, took out the battery and ran to get some rice. It has been there ever since, and i don't know how long it is supposed to be there, and if my phone has any hope of working at all once its done. my birthday is in six days. should i just ask for a new phone? or should i wait to see if it works?

p.s. I have dropped a phone in the toilet before and dried it out with a towel, and i got a new one the next day because i couldn't get it to work. i had the new one for maybe three months when i tried turning on the old one. it turned on, but it pressed random keys when i was using the keyboard, and half the buttons did not work. will this happen with my phone now?

anon127841

I've dropped my phone before and tried working it. Apparently the water was leaked into the screen, so now it's broken.

I've been looking into saving my phones from water damages or physical drops. Apparently, there is a small philadelphia company that sells an innovative phone leash. I would give it a try on this product, if I was dropping my phones.

Sat in a 104 degree hot tub for five minutes with my EVO in my pocket before realizing it. Got out and the phone was already off with water clearly swishing around behind the screen, so I pulled the battery and wrapped it in a towel while I grieved.

Read a lot online about rice to soak up the water, alcohol and distilled water baths, about how one soak in chlorine and it was done forever, bla bla bla.

Here's what I did.

I was on vacation, so I ran to radio shack and got a precision screwdriver set and some electronic cleaner. I opened the phone up and took it apart. If you don't know how to do this, search youtube for your phone model and something like "repair." With a clean towel and the spray, I cleaned all of the circuit boards and connections. Stay away from the microphone and speaker with the cleaner!

Then, still apart, I put the hotel dryer on low about a foot away and dried it thoroughly for 4-6 hours.

Put it back together and ta-da! Everything works like a charm.

anon121358

Last night, I dropped my phone in a cup of orange juice. I immediately pulled it out.

I dried it off, took the battery out and put it in rice over night. it was probably in rice for about eight hours or so. I turned it on this morning, and the front of my phone doesn't work well. it starts like pressing random things and doing different commands that i didn't choose.

And the keyboard part of my phone works for the most part but when im texting and go to press a letter, it starts adding random letters and symbols instead. and the screen is water damaged.

Also, it is vibrating? not like a text vibrate, like a very low vibrating coming from the phone. i turned the phone off and it still continued to do so, so i took the battery out. it only vibrates when i have the battery in. i even replaced it with a new one, still vibrated. What do i do!?

anon119717

I worked at Motorola and we used 95-99 percent alcohol. We would take out the battery and put the phone in a bath of it move it around and then take it and sit it near a vent (or the window if we had one in that booth). It worked about 85-95 percent of the time.

So, someone calls me at 1:44 a.m. on a school night. I am sleeping but I pick up when I hear it. I tell him I'm out of it and I'm going to bed. Then I seemingly put my phone on the shelf beside me. Then around 2ish am, I hear my phone vibrating.

I'm thinking, "Who is calling me now?!". I reach for my phone on the shelf beside me, the one I put it on, right? Wrong.

Turns out I put my phone in a cup of water sitting on the shelf. And I didn't realize this until I felt that the cup was vibrating. When I realized my phone was in it, well that kind of stunk. The pieces parts are in rice but I'm not seeing much hope for this phone that soaked in water for 15 minutes. I'm thinking I'll laugh about this when I have a working phone again.

It vibrated continuously for 10 minutes before i finally took out the battery. I got home and took my phone apart and rinsed out the circuits with freshwater. There was a lot of salt deposits inside and some of the circuits already looks like they were rusting. After rinsing i patted it dry with paper towel and placed it in a zip lock bag filled with rice. I will leave it to dry for three or four days before i reassemble the phone and reinsert the battery. I will let you guys know if that works.

I have the env3 and I was in the bathroom and stupidly forgot to put my phone down before I went. My hands were slippery and the env3 slipped out of my hands and plopped right into the toilet. I quickly pulled my phone out of the toilet (thankfully it was off). I took the battery out to check for water damage. The battery was wet and the ink on the battery was smudging and the battery itself was damp.

I didn't know the battery shouldn't go back in the phone so I put it back in. I put the phone in the charger because the battery was dead before the incident, and turned my phone on. It turned on but the outer end key wasn't responding and the inside keyboard would respond. Then when I flipped the phone closed, my phone froze.

I went to two different Verizon wireless stores. The first one told me my phone was broken forever, the damage was irreversible, and that the env3 was discontinued. The second store i went to told me that I should try putting my phone in rice which my phone is in now. They also told me that they would gladly switch my phone with the same maroon ENV3. I was pleased with how well they reacted to the situation.

Hopefully my phone will work and I won't have to purchase a new one. If anyone has any suggestions please post a comment. I am desperate.

i had the lg dare from verizon wireless and i dropped it in the toilet, (not used by the way) and immediately after i put it in rice overnight, and in the morning it was fine -- it just turned off randomly once every like three hours, but other then that it worked! i recommend rice for any water damages because it soaks all of the water away. If you don't have rice then try putting it in dry macaroni noodles. hope this helped people.

anon103305

I dropped my phone in the toilet after i went. I stopped for a moment and then grabbed it out of the dirty water. Being a dumb 12 year old. I put it in rice after i dried it off and then i put it over the air conditioner. Will the rice work? If not my dad will be so mad at me.

anon103211

I jumped in a salt water pool fully clothed (cell in my pocket) to save my niece. She was floating in the pool. Luckily I was able to pull her out before she sucked down too much water. She's going to be just fine, but (not that it compares to life of my nice) my phone is not. Thanks for the info about the rice. I'm trying it now.

anon102826

Yeah the rice works wonders drying things out. However, you still have to take the thing apart and clean it. I took a paper towel and wet it with water and cleaned the various parts, scraped the 'rust' off and cleaned the battery -- and then it finally worked again.

anon102749

I dropped my phone down the toilet earlier today.

it was just clean water down there -- nothing else!

As it was all clean i decided to grab it out as fast as possible. I got it out and i first pushed a few buttons to see if it was okay. it was working fine, then it just froze and no buttons were working. i took the battery out and dried it with a towel. i also wiped the sim card and memory card as well, just in case! i put it all back in to see if it works. it didn't -- not really. It just kept on freezing.

i wanted to see if it was working fine so i called my friend! she was quieter than usual but she said she could hear me fine! i put her on loud speaker to see if i could hear her. i couldn't -- it was just a loud noise. i put my headset in to speak to her through that, then my phone froze and i had to take the battery out. i left it in the airing cupboard for a while and now i have taken it out. i used the tips you said just in case it was still wet inside and it seems to be working better! Has a bit of condensation in the corner of the screen and I'm not sure if it freezes still, but all seems okay so far!

anon102735

I dropped my phone into a lake during the late night. I swam for it and could not find it due to poor lighting.

The next day, I dived for it again and found it.

I put it in rice and let it sit in the oven at 180 degrees for a few minutes. It is now back in the rice.

Does it even have a chance?

anon101613

I dropped my BlackBerry Curve in the toilet. Pulled it out and took out the battery immediately. Took a dryer (at a low setting) to the body for a few moments, then patted it all down with paper towel, then put the body in rice; left the battery and back cover out to dry. I left it for four days as I'd read somewhere it can take up to 1 week to dry out and that the key was to leave it and really let it dry- don't keep putting the battery back in to see if it works.

Today I put it back together and it works! Everything is working fine. I feel very fortunate. One of the forums I read said that sometimes the battery can short out, so maybe if your phone still isn't working, try a new battery first before getting rid of your phone?

anon100685

I had my phone in my pocket like 5 minutes when I was swimming in the pool and then I realızed that it was in my pocket. I took it up and tried to open it but I think it's gone now.

anon100636

when your phone gets wet, put it in rice for 24 hours for and all the water is absorbed. this works 90 percent of the time.

anon100281

My phone was in my pocket and I was outside by the pool. I tripped and fell in the water. I immediately took the phone out and it looked like it was working. But then it shut off. I dried everything and put it back in the phone without the back. I read to put it in the freezer. So that's where it is at now. What should I do next if it doesn't work?

anon99438

my phone (droid eris) was on when it hit water and i turned it on 2 x after I patted it dry. the first time by accident, the second the see if there was water in the screen (i hadn't read this yet) a total of 30 seconds and yanked my battery again. I'm going to try it tomorrow or the day after. hopefully i didn't kill the phone. if not, at least I have insurance.

anon98326

I dropped my phone into a lovely bubble bath today and immediately reached down, nearly falling over to retrieve it. The screen kept on flashing so i immediately pulled out the battery and shook out the water because i was playing music and the music turned off i and then came back on when i shook it.

Not long after, i turned it on and the screen went black with that little loading square. i tried charging it and the little led red light came on and the screen lit up and flashed on and off, so i though OK I'll do some research. So i blow dried my phone for about 20 minutes on the cool air and I've placed it in a bowl of rice. Will my phone be OK? It's a blackberry curve, by the way.

anon96524

i dropped my lg rumor 1 from sprint in the bathtub trying to pull out the stopper and it fell in. i set it in rice and know my buttons flash but the phone works perfectly. what should i do about the buttons?

@anon94962: I am honestly not trying to be a smart aleck, but really! You've ruined three phones, by your own admission, because you took them in the shower! Cell phones that are not rated waterproof are not meant to be in the shower. Period.

I hope your phone starts working again, but don't take it in the shower again! I promise that whatever texts you get can wait the 15 minutes it takes you to get in and out of the shower.

I just don't get people who have to take their cell phones to the bathroom with them, in the shower, etc. Accidents can happen, sure, but doing this on a regular basis is a recipe for disaster.

anon95324

Yesterday I was fruit picking. Then i put my phone in the same bag as the peaches because i was feeling really tired. Then i washed the peaches and i didn't dry them. So a lot of water got into my phone.

I didn't read this yet, so I didn't know. Now my D-Pad doesn't work, nor do some of my buttons. My mom won't get me a new phone, and I'm too young to get one.

Can someone please tell me how to fix this problem? It's been a day. Can my phone still have hope?

anon94962

I was getting out of the shower and got water on the battery. it's happened with three of my phones already. What do i do? Please, I'm not taking my phone to verizon. my dad'll get super mad.

anon94870

I dropped my phone in the water when i was with my friend. it was in there for about 10 seconds. the water was not pure and was disgusting.

when i took it out, i took the battery out straight away and i dried it with my top and took all the parts off.

i then opened the charge flap and shook it. all the water came out. after that i left in the sun for four hours and then it was fine. don't panic -- just take the battery out.

anon94754

If you are old enough to go out and buy a new phone, consider yourself lucky! I'm 13 and i dropped my cell into the pool when i tripped over my dog and it flew out of my hands. If that had happened to my mom or dad it "would be just an accident! No biggie!" But for me, "Be careful!"

i have had a phone for three years and this is a first. I would recommend telling your parents the same day. Whatever you do, do not tell a sibling! They will rat you out. Its battery and phone are sitting in rice right now. I hope it emerges or no more fun for me until Christmas. It's july.

anon94748

I dropped my phone on the way home. It's raining outside badly, and I still can't find it. can I still save it if I can find it the next day?

anon94025

I dropped my phone in my pool, and did not notice for about 10 minutes. surprisingly it was still on when i got it out.

I took the battery out, and blow dried it (i know now I'm not supposed to), and after about a hour it started glitching and trying to make calls. i let it out to dry, and 24 hours later it is working fine. My question is: did i just get lucky, or was there water damage and the phone can go out any day now?

anon93904

Yesterday i was about to take a shower and i was in my washroom. I took my phone out of my pocket and it slipped out of my hands into the toilet.

I immediately took it out of the toilet and took out the battery and blow dried it. I'm not sure what else to do. I've been waiting for almost a day now. Please help me.

anon93391

My phone fell in the toilet yesterday. I can turn it on but the send, power button, and the left numbers don't work at all! Its a keyboard type. All i did was dry it out and since it was my first time dropping it in water it was in the toilet for 10 seconds from me panicking. Any suggestions?

anon92315

I have an issue! i just dropped my Rogue in my dog's water dish. I don't know how but all my buttons work besides my touch screen!

I was wondering if i can still do all the same task as i can with the touch screen? how will i fix the touch screen? Can anyone help? Like can i still open messages and how? Thank you!

anon91906

I noticed a lot of people are using a hair dryer. Don't do that! A dryer is to hot and can further damage your phone. Also, it can blow the water into smaller spaces in your phone and ruin it! I suggest using the vacuum hose to suck out the water then put it in rice to soak up more water. good luck!

anon91793

I dropped my phone in the sink and i only noticed 10 seconds later and i dried it off but i didn't take the battery out till like 10 minutes later. I never turned it off until now. my phone works but all the buttons don't. only my touch buttons on the screen. do you think it will still work if i just put it in a bowl of rice now?

anon91708

The same thing happen to me! the worst feeling in the world because i didn't have a warranty on my phone.

i couldn't repair it myself so i just sent it to a repair center that i found online.

I was skeptical at first to send it but manned up. lol

Great service! Crazy fast and great pricing.

Anyway, thought i would share.

anon91592

i dropped my phone (a blackberry curve) in my bathtub because i was texting as it was filling up. i slipped and what do you know -- it in the water so i fished it out after like two or three seconds and luckily I'd read something like this article and i immediately took the battery out dried it off and as i write this i have it on the air vent. Hopefully it works! I can't get a new phone if it doesn't so i really hope it does.

anon91579

I have a Samsung Rogue. I was texting someone poolside and dropped it in my chlorine pool. I've done this before: put it in rice. that worked. Five minutes ago i dropped it again and i don't know if it will work again or not! Ugh!

anon91224

OK so i don't currently have a phone so i borrow my mom's a lot and i was wearing a pullover sweatshirt and i had it in the front pocket and as i flushed the toilet the phone fell in and i reacted quickly and grabbed it before it could disappear.

I tried to take the battery out, but couldn't find out how. i finally find out how after about five seconds and started drying it with my sweat shirt. i quickly found some rice and put it in there. it is now up in my closet and I'm hoping it will work tomorrow but i realized before i got the battery out the screen turned grey. it's an lg env3 and my mom can't find out! somebody please please help me.

anon90494

Yeah, I was canoeing with a couple of stupid friends about four hours ago, and we all had our phones in our pockets because we are stupid, and we capsized the canoe and all feel into the water. I have the phone in rice as we speak, but I think it may be goodnight Irene for the phone. Thankfully nobody drowned.

anon90281

I had my phone in my pocket when i went into my pool and 10 minutes later i realized it was in my pocket so i took it out and dried it off and let it sit out in the sun.

It wasn't completely dry and there was water trapped in my screen and i tried to turn it on and when i did, all the buttons lit up and then the phone just turned off (i think i may have short circuited).

Three days have gone by and I left my phone in rice for that period of time and once in a while seeing if it works. The buttons light up and that's about it. Only twice has my phone been able to work like typing things and hearing my ringtones but my screen doesn't turn on. I don't know what to do. i can't really afford a new phone but i have a $50 warranty. is there any way i can remove the internal memory card because i have a lot of things that i need in my phone.

I have a samsung messenger 2. Can anyone please help?

anon90189

I was going to use the bathroom and i forgot that it was in my pocket and i dropped it in the toilet and quickly took it out and it was wet, so now it's sitting in kitty litter.

anon89968

How long should you wait for your phone to start working after being dropped in the water before you know it is time to get a new one?

anon88980

I have recently dropped my samsung u900 in the river taking a picture of ducklings, everything works but the screen. Any idea how to fix it?

Also yesterday while fishing I dropped my samsung b3410 in the fishing pool. I turned it off straight away and not long after, took the battery out and started drying it on the car heater. Still got it turned off to dry it out.

Does the rice theory work? Anyone ever done the same with the same phone? I can't believe I've managed to put two phones in water this month. Hubby ain't impressed. lol.

Jacoreya Lanise

I was washing dishes today and my phone was on the cabinet. somehow water touched my phone and now it won't come on. it's been sitting for about four or five hours, and under the air conditioner now. so what am I to do with my phone? (my boo).

anon87272

Well, yesterday I was getting ready. My dress didn't have pockets so i just put in in my shirt. I bent over to get a hair clip that was on the back of the toilet and it slipped out in it! It was in there about two seconds, if that.

The battery and the back came out by itself while it was falling. My dad took a hair dryer to it and shook all the water out. It would turn on, and all the buttons would work, but the touchscreen was unresponsive and there was still water under it. I shut it off for about two hours.

Once the water under the screen dried, i turned it back on. It miraculously started working! It is a chocolate touch. It works just like it did and i only waited two hours. I don't think anybody should try that. I must have just been lucky!

anon87204

i dropped my blackberry curve in a pool today and i took the battery out and sim and tried to dry it best as i could. I now have it sitting under a radiator so the heat dries it.

At the moment, though, it is on and working-is, but i had water inside the screen but it has now gone and i think it's gone to my keypad because some of my keys aren't working.

Is there anything to do but rice as i don't have any rice at the moment?

anon86520

i dropped my phone in the toilet. i have a bad habit of putting it my back pocket and this is the second time. The first time it got completely totalled but i acted fast this time. i took it out, took out the battery and sim and dried everything. it's a samsung flight. should it be OK if i let it air dry or should i blow dry it?

anon86053

I went to the beach and dropped my cell phone in the ocean. I got a towel really fast and started drying it. Then I thought I should take the battery out. I did. water started pouring out. I dried it until there was no water to be seen.

I slowly put the battery in and it did not turn on. I was so sad. I put my cell phone and my battery on the window sill until the next day. It is not still working! Help me! What should I do?

anon83164

I was trying to save a bug from drowning in my friend's pool. But i lost my balance and fell in i leaped out as fast as i could. But i totally forgot my phone was in my back pocket. I remembered and panicked removing my phone from my pocket. My phone was still on!

My friend told me i should put it in a bowl of rice so i did. Later that night i removed it but it wouldn't turn on. But today my touch screen works but my end, clear and send buttons don't so if my phone like locks i have no way to unlock it without receiving a text message or plugging it in.

I don't have insurance on it so it stinks. please give me some advice.

anon83148

i dropped my HTC Touch Diamond in the pool and took it out asap and took out the battery and sim.

It is now currently sitting in a bag of rice.

Is this good? Will it work again?

anon83147

my iphone fell in last week and now it's working.

at first it fell it i immediately tried pressing buttons. the screen went black and would not turn on. i kept trying to turn it on just after it fell in. you probably heard that never to keep trying to turn it on but it did not harm mine at all.

take out your sim card.

use your hairdryer on low heat for 15 minutes. then put it in a bag of rice and put it in the airing cupboard. leave it in for approx 5-7 days and it should be fine.

mine works now and it was under water for approx 4 seconds.

good luck!!

anon83096

I dropped my phone in a mud puddle and i didn't notice but then i found it. i put it in rice for about seven hours and it worked. Than 10 min later i didn't so i put it in rice again. i think i might be short circuited it. any advice?

anon82887

I was holding my phone while near the toilet and I accidentally dropped it. It took me a while to get it out because I was in shock, and when I got it out and it was still on so I took the battery out and dried all the parts with a hair-dryer and let it sit for awhile. Now it's sitting in a bowl of rice. It's a myTouch and I don't think it will work, because it's all touch screen.

anon82832

So i dropped my Palm Pre in the toilet. I took it out and didn't know what to do so i was drying it with a towel and then hair dryer on cold before i found out you should take out the battery, open it up and dry it out.

I then talked to where i bought it and she suggested to take a q-tip dipped in acetone and completely clean out the inside of the battery compartment and connectors, once you've done that place it under a light bulb for a couple days.

I did that and today I talked to the Palm pre guys and they had me put it all back together again and turn it on. Guess what? So far so good. So for those of you with the rice idea apparently that doesn't work, they said to use Silica Gel if you have it. You know those things in bottles of vitamins or jerky? put in a container for a couple days as a alternative. I'll keep in touch and let you all know if it still works.

anon82446

I have a blackberry curve and a few months ago I dropped it in water. I took it apart, took the battery out, and dried it with a towel. I then vacuumed it out for a few minutes but the screen still had water in it. I was convinced that I would have to buy a new one so on the way to alltel I put it on top of my dash board and blasted the defrost. It worked. Well tonight, I dropped it again. Of course it flies out of my hand and into the only water puddle around for miles. Just my luck! Hopefully it will work like it did last time, it's drying right now, but I have that gut feeling/fear that it's completely shot out!

I have a Samsung exclaim, i left it out in the rain for a few hours. i got it and noticed the interface was weird like with connecting with the correct buttons, like i hit down on the key pay and boom I'm calling a random person on my contacts list, my battery color pad changed from white to pink. i have the phone in a bag of rice under a lamp now. I'm going to leave it for half an hour and see.

does someone have advice for me?

anon77517

I dropped my phone in a swimming pool yesterday. i was like four feet away from the edge and my phone slipped out of my hand and bounced like six times a and straight into the pool. I got it out like as fast as i could .and i took out the battery and dried all of it off and got as much water out of as i possibly could.

i put it in a bag of rice, and it's been almost 24 hours, and there is still water in the screen.

People keep telling me to put it in the fridge and my science teacher said put it in the freezer, but i don't know. i think i will just keep it in the rice for another day and then i will just leave it out to dry for a few more days. I hope it still works.

anon77417

I left my neon out in the rain on the back of our truck, thought about it about three hours later. I brought it in and took the battery and sims card out and used a blow dryer on low heat using the cool shots on and off to keep it from getting too hot. This was after i dried it off.

After i blow dried it there was water under the screen and fogged up, i thought this is ruined but i put it in a bowl of raw rice for a day and a half and guess what? It worked!

The phone is fine now. The rice really works!

anon74786

I dropped my Samsung Advance in the toilet today. Immediately (no more than three seconds) I pulled it out. The phone was still on, but then I noticed that the sound was going. About a minute later, the phone turned off.

I took the battery out, dried it. Then tried to turn it on again, still no luck. I used a blow dryer on it, and now it turns on, and everything works perfectly, but my sound is screwy. It's so low and I can barely hear if I make a call.

I have now taken the phone apart and have it sitting in a bowl of rice. Will the sound come back on my phone or will it always be low?

Please help! My phone cost $329 plus tax, and I really don't want to buy a new one.

I tried turning it on and off and the screen was unresponsive but everything else is fully functional at the moment. I am now drying it out in a warm place: n top of the television, because it gets hot because there is a radiator behind it.

We are in the process of drying it out and my mum has dropped hers in the fish tank before and said that she dried it out in the airing cupboard so I will post back wherever this work and may be another alternative to rice or coffee beans!

Earlier today I was going to a movie and I was getting ready. I was grabbing the perfume and then my phone fell out of my pocket and into the toilet. It was in there for about 2-3 seconds.

I ran out of the bathroom and took the battery out and towel dried it. Since I am 11 and dumb I kept my phone on the whole time and I put it in rice and it is still currently in there. I put the battery in twice in the last hour to see. Any suggestions?

anon70418

I left my phone outside all night in the rain -- I know! I thought I left in the car, but apparently it fell out. When I got to it the battery was dead so I went home and, following advice from friends, blow dried it with a hair dryer. It turned on but then immediately powered off.

So I charged it, and now there's a white screen with water droplets on it. I just put it in a bowl of rice, after letting it sit for a day, airing it out. Do you think it's too late? Any advice would be great!

I dropped my month old nokia n97 mini down the toilet last weekend and the battery came out when it hit the bowl before the water.

i immediately followed it and ripped it out, dried it with a cloth and went straight on the net! nor did i try to turn it on. thankfully I saw this and said id give it a go, except i had no rice so i went to the store to get it.

i put the phone into one bowl of rice and the battery into another. I put my sim in and old phone and went back to college for the week, (college is an hour away so i go home on weekends).

Anyway, I'm just back today, tried the phone and it's working perfectly and is charging right now! I'm delighted! hopefully it'll last! Seriously do what it says. it works! (so far)

I just dropped my MP3 player in the toilet! Argh and it was on at the time, which is not good. I right away took it out, dried it, and am now going to put it in rice for a few days. I'm tempted to turn it on, but know I should wait, cause there's probably still water in it.

I just wanted to say: I notice a lot of people on here drying their phone/mp3 with a hairdryer. Don't do this!

I know it's a pain to wait for it to dry, but the air from a hairdryer is too hot, it won't help, and will most likely cause an even worse problem!

anon66573

Well yesterday i had forgot that my LG virgin Mobile cell phone was in my skirt pocket and i had washed it in the washer machine. About 11 minutes later i had finally realized that my phone was missing so i checked in the washer and there it was.

It was just buzzing like crazy so then i took a towel and dried it to the best of my abilities, took the phone apart (battery and sim card) and now it's sitting in rice and has been for a full day now.

At first it would just vibrate and the light would come on a little bit, and now it just vibrates a little bit and the screen won't come on at all.

I really don't think the rice is helping. Any other suggestion rather than blow drying it?

anon66128

can someone help me please? i put in uncooked rice for about five days. i took out everything: the sim card, memory card and my battery. It's an lg shine. any advice?

My blackberry got beer spilled on it last night. I left my phone on all night because I didn't realize it was damaged until the morning. When I tried using it, none of the buttons worked. I put it in a bowl of rice, and it's still currently in there. I took it out once just to check on it, which probably wasn't smart.

However, it did power up and the buttons worked. I put it back into the rice and plan to let it sit overnight. Any other ideas for me?

i couldn't go home for like an hour, so i sat it in the sun. I blow dried it and turned in on and it seemed to work. But then funny colors came on when turning it on again. Now its sitting in rice. Do you think it will be OK?

I dropped my cell phone in the dog's water bowl! i took it out not even a split second afterwards -- literally. i took the battery out and immediately dried it off, and the phone itself, and blow dried it.

It turns on and i can text, browse, take pictures and whatnot, but i cannot receive or make calls. Any suggestions?

I'm like flipping! it was over $150 and i got it for my b-day. I don't know what to do! I'm going to be so screwed if it doesn't work! and oh the sticker on the battery is pink, and i see purple x's? what is this? Please help me!

anon61888

i was getting ready to take a bath and was putting the water in the tub. and i had my virgin mobile phone in my sweater pocket.

when i bent over to turn the water off, my phone fell in the tub full of water. my phone was in the water for like two seconds and i pulled it out. when it came out of the water it was buzzing like crazy. so i quickly took the back off.

i took the battery out. that was last year and it never worked again. what should i do? is there a chance that it will ever work again? if so, please help by telling me what to do, by telling me in the next comment!

anon60846

Yesterday, I was cleaning my bathroom. I bent over to grab a piece of garbage, and my phone fell out of my pocket and into the toilet. it was on when this happened and right before I turned it off and took the battery out, there was already water in the screen!

It was only in the toilet for like, two seconds! It's sitting in a container of rice in the sunlight, but I don't know if that will get all the water out of the screen.

I can't tell my parents, because they spent over 100 dollars to get it on Christmas, so it wasn't very long ago.

Is there anything else to do? I took it apart as much as possible, the phone cover, the back, the battery, and the memory chip! :( I'm basically dead if this doesn't work. It'll either be no phone till i have enough money to get my own, or get screamed at till i die.

anon60629

Anon 58665! I have that same phone and it just happened to me! did your phone ever work again? please get back to me, thanks, and anyone can help. I've blown dried it and now it's in brown rice in tupperware.

anon60592

So this morning I dropped my samsung link into the potty. I hesitated to grab it because I got scared and it stayed in for like 10 seconds before I kind of buzzed in what was going on.

I then grabbed it and dried it off. I dried the outside but i don't know how to take off the back and remove the battery so I left it in until I got to school and asked my friends what to do. They said I had to take the battery out but I didn't know how so they took it out for me and the water damage stickers on the battery were red, so I definitely need a new battery.

I haven't tried recovering my phone yet and everyone says try soaking in rice? Will I be able to save the battery still or even the phone itself even though the stickers are red? can i turn them back purple?

anon60408

My phone was in my back pocket and when i pulled my pants down i had forgot it was back there and it fell in. i didn't think twice about grabbing it; i just went in. it was in there for maybe two seconds, but i had just bought a new battery one week ago!

i took the battery out and the sim card. i just dried it off and put everything back in. it works fine, just the screen changes colors a little. it's sitting in coffee beans now? i heard that helps? any other ideas?

anon60219

Actually there's an easier way to do if you drop your cell phone in water. What you want to do is take the phone apart like the battery sim card and then just like the cell phone and put it in rice. doesn't matter what kind, but it works better

anon59492

I dropped my cell in pineapple juice and immediately turned it on. At first, it did work, but later when I turned it on or charged it, It would stay on with the at&t logo that comes before turning on only and won't do any thing else. My parents told me to let it dry. It still doesn't work and I'm very scared because it was my first good cell phone and I ruined everything. Please I need help. How do I make it work?

anon59467

i dropped my sidekick slide in the tub full of water. i took it out immediately and blow dried it. It wouldn't turn on. So a day later it turned on, i went to bed and woke up to the phone being turned off. Since then it wouldn't turn on. Should I let it dry more?

anon58757

i slipped and my phone slipped out of my hands and flew into the water. will it work again?

anon58665

I dropped my phone in the toilet about 20 minutes ago. Luckily, there was nothing in the toilet but toilet water.

I took it out immediately, took the battery and SIM card out, dried everything with a blow drier, and left it. When I put the battery back in, it shows the starting screen, shuts off, and restarts again.

It's a samsung impression, so touch screen and keyboard. Any ideas how I can save it?

anon58395

all you have to do is soak it in rice for about 25-30 minutes depending on how badly its damaged then you're done and if you still have water spots, soak i little while longer but be sure to take out the battery of the phone and soak it too. i also sometimes do the sim.

anon58347

if you drop your phone in water, remove the battery and sim card and put each piece in a separate bag or bowl of dry rice. let it soak for a few days (the longer the better) and then it should work. but do it fast

anon56707

My phone fell in the dog's water bowl. It's a G1, so it's a slider, touch-screen, and has a track ball. Ugh. I had a clear plastic shell on it at the time.

I pulled it out almost immediately and the battery compartment had only gotten a few drops inside, but the contacts were dry. I put my phone in front of a little fan for about eight hours and then stuck it in a tupperware full of rice for about 72 hours. Tried it just now and it works like a charm. :)

anon55145

i just dropped my lg xenon in a hot tub while hanging with my friends about an hour ago. For some reason i was really calm, so i took out the battery immediately and dried it off with a towel. i tried putting the battery back in it just to see if it would work and the camera light turned on and it just kept vibrating.

my friend said the same thing happened to him and he said when he dropped his in the water, he took out the battery and charged it without the battery in for like two days. he then put the battery back in and it worked fine.

anon54623

I left my Nokia N73 in my pants and forgot to remove it before soaking my pants in the washing machine, and i realized it after 1 and half hours. i took the mobile and detached it and dried with hair dryer. it's been more than six hours and i didn't turn it on. what should i do next? please help me soon.

anon54504

my friend just got a new phone case to put on her motorola rival and it got stuck. what should she do?

anon54153

I just dropped my Nokia Express Music phone in the bath and i turned it on straight away to see if it was working. It was, then the screen started to go funny.

Now i've taken the battery, sim card, memory card and back cover off the phone. The phone's on the radiator drying after i towel dried it.

The only way to stop your phone from getting wet is to not take it into the bathroom and check your pockets before you put your clothes in the washing machine.

anon53668

Rice for 72 hours worked for me, even after the phone went through the washing machine in my pocket.

I recharged it and turned it on, but it wouldn't turn off. So then I dismantled it and buried it in raw rice. Seems fine now. Thank you wise geek and friends!

anon51723

my ericsson fell in a cup of ramen noodles. It'll turn on, but not off, and the screen isn't working at all. I think I may have put the battery in too soon.

anon51671

My env3 just went through the washing machine i took it out and it had bubbles all over it. It is sitting in rice right now. but should I do something else? Help!

anon49968

Okay. I dropped my Palm cell phone in the toilet and took it out about 2 seconds after it fell. First I took apart my phone: the case, the back, and battery. I then dried everything with a towel, then blow dried it, then used a cotton swab. I tried hooking it up to the charger and turning it on but there's just been the green light flashing when i press the power button. I took out the battery and haven't put it back on yet. What should I do?

anon48287

i was in the bathroom and then the phone was on the shelf then when i was drying my hair, the phone went accidentally inside the toilet. i took the battery out then i dried but it won't work, i put inside the rice in the dark cupboard and it still want work. someone please give me some advice. I beg of you people.

anon48193

Is this the same thing with mp3 player? I dropped mine into soapy water and i don't know what to do with it now! Help!

anon47517

I dropped my phone into the ocean while i was sailing on a boat. My phone was on and once it fell off i immediately jumped in after it. I got it out and my son told me to put it in a jar of salt and rubbing alcohol and it worked! My phone works just as good as it did before.

anon46458

i accidentally washed and dried my husbands phone in an inside coat pocket. when it came out of the dryer it worked just fine. believe it or not, i'ts true.

anon44477

i dropped my cell phone in my pool about a month ago and it stopped working, but i could turn it on and off and i could accept calls but none of the buttons would work and two days ago it started working, but the next day it stopped working again. what should i do?

anon44085

So last night i went to a party and whoops! my one-day-old blackberry curve cell phone fell with the case on in the toilet. since i was intoxicated it took me a while to figure it out. it was in there for a good 30 seconds. automatically i took out the battery got a hair dryer and dried it to my best ability. everyone who was there suggested putting it in rice so i did that over night. i was curious to see if it would be already working and it does. i put the battery in! (i wouldn't suggest doing this since the phone could short circuit) anyway I'm leaving it in the sun to dry and going to put it in the rice for another two or three days.

anon43191

My brand new sidekick fell into my dog's water dish. i pulled it out as soon as possible and took the back off and the battery out. i swiveled the screen open and then let it dry for a night. i waited until the afternoon came to try it out. Everything

works fine but the menu key (really important) and the trackball. this sucks. oh i forgot to mention i tried the rice thing for awhile after it fell in; it just went into the small cracks of everything and now doesn't come out.

anon42902

I dropped my phone in the toliet yesterday night. I right away took the battery out and let it dry and about 20 minutes and then tried to turn it on didn't do anything so I popped my husband's battery in my phone (we have the same phone) and it worked. So I am letting my battery dry and I am going to see if it works in a couple of days.

anon42525

i just dropped my blackberry in the pool. i took it out from the deep end it was still on so i put it in a bowl of rice in the freezer. don't know how long to keep it in there but i hope it works soon.

anon42455

i dropped my ericsson in washing up bowl and it stopped working even after i had left it for two weeks. 3 months later i decided to see if i could get it repaired. got it out the drawer, turned it on and it works fine, camera and everything! Just needed extra drying time i suppose!

anon42189

I just dropped my phone in a bucket of water I was soaking my feet in. It's in a bucket of rice and under a warmer light now. Two months ago I had another cellphone that was in my pocket, which I removed and put on top of my car. And after an appointment, I drove away, my phone fell out in front of the Home Depot, and got run over somewhere around 12 times.

anon41972

After my grandson dropped his phone in a swimming pool, it would not work. I had read to remove the battery and dry off the phone, and then put it in dry rice overnight. It worked. Dry rice soaks up moisture. It had a little moisture in the front screen but went away in a day. He only had to reset the screen pictures.

anon41602

dropped mine in the toilet got it out immediately. it was real quick. then i took the battery out and dried it.

i turned it back on and it seemed to work fine but now screen is blank, but phone rings and works. maybe it will clear up in a few days.

anon41069

Well you guys make me feel better. I just dropped my phone into my pool from my secnd story building, but I made a lot of mistakes so far. I tried blow drying it *and* I put the battery back in a few times. Now I'm just letting it sit. Damn I hope it works. It's brand new, and my mom paid over 100 dollars for it. Oh well.

i have the waterproof phone the verizon gz one bolder and somehow it got water in it and it was working but now the phone got erased and there is nothing on it and i can't get phone calls or texts. Now the phone won't even turn on. is there any way to sace the phone?

anon40209

I put my phone on the bathroom shelf and i was putting my shampoo in the holder hanger in the shower and i put it in (the bath water was running for my baby sister) and my elbow hit the shelf and my phone fell in the water and i need my phone to dry in like 30 minutes and i don't know what to do.

anon40128

I dropped my phone in a cup of water and was able to pull it out immediately, but i didn't take it apart, and I turned it on as soon as i dried it the best i could. It worked fine at 1st, then it got where it would turn on normal but i couldn't use any of the other keys.I'm getting my texts, phone calls and alarms but I can't do anything about them because the keys aren't working. Also to turn it off I have to take the battery out. Is there any way to fix this?

anon39391

I just dropped mine in a river a few hours ago and brought it back home after taking out the battery. then I took it apart and stuck it in a food dehydrator/ beef jerky maker and left it in there for about half an hour and it works fine now. so if you got one of those laying around use it!

my att doesn't work after the warwe incident. can i buy a go phone and use my att sim card and be back on the network?

anon37796

Well I took my phone out of my vest pocket and removed it from the ziplock bag it was in only to drop it while trying to take a picture while controlling the fish I just landed. It's an iPhone, and i turned it off immediately. Well, i just got home and found out it had turned back on and seemed to be working fine. I did just shut it back off and remove the sim card, but really, you can't get to the battery on an iphone. 3 days!

anon37567

too bad I didn't see this article earlier! I dropped my phone in a puddle of water, and didn't take it apart and let it dry after a few hours. Also, I first tried to turn it on because obviously after dropping it in water, it wasn't turning on. I've now taken it apart and put all the pieces in a bowl of rice, but it might be too late :( do you think i should wait for a day?

anon37477

Today, my cell phone fell in -- surprise! -- the toilet. I pulled it out ASAP, my boyfriend took the battery out and we dried it as best we could with a towel. We put the battery back in, but every time it was put in, it vibrated dully. We used a hair dryer on it at short intervals to make sure it didn't get overheated, at which point we tried putting the battery back in and while the vibrating had stopped, a few of the buttons were firing at random. We then took it apart even more and let it air dry for an hour or so before putting it back together. At this point, it seems fully functional!

anon36917

OMG!!! like 20 minutes ago, i had went to use the bathroom and forgot my phone was in my back pocket. As i was unzipping, my phone fell into the toilet and i looked at it for a second and was like Aaaahhh!!! so i pulled it out of there and it was in there for like 5, maybe seven seconds.... and my first reaction was to start pressing buttons, so i did and none worked, but the phone was still on. so i started shaking it to ty and get the water off.... then after that, i noticed half of the screen was kind of dark. so i went to my sister and she told me to take out the battery. so i was sitting on the floor for like 5 minutes trying to get the battery out, well when i did, i only saw like a few drops of water.. then i thought of the internet, so here i am now....

But right now, i need my phone to dry *fast*! because my dad would have a cow if he found out what happened!!!!

anon36303

i was turning off the light switch while my phone was in my hand and it fell into the toilet! what can i do besides use rice??

I dropped my phone into toilet last night but my cat jumped in and grabbed it for me. His name is Burla, he is very smart.

anon33836

I keep seeing the same questions on from people who haven't read the above article.

I've dropped my Blackberry Pearl into water *twice* and it works perfectly. Here's what i do & some common *do's and don'ts*:

Do's:

If you get your phone wet *pull the battery out immediately!* And *don't* put it back in!

Disassemble it as much as you can. If you can pull it apart completely (to the circuit board) then *do it!*

Dry it as much as possible with cotton wool or cotton buds.

Leave it somewhere warm (*not* hot!!!) as drying is a gradual process & should be done over 2-3 days.

Don'ts:

*Do not put the battery back in!!* Dropping your phone is an awful feeling. But *never* get curious and put the battery back in early. Wait the 2/3 days till dry.

9/10 times it will short circuit the phone and it will be broken.

*Don't dry it with a hairdryer!* It won't evaporate the moisture, and will force the moisture deeper in.

*Don't try to heat it in any way!* I have to stress it needs to be dried *slowly*. Put it near a low heater, in hot water cupboard, near a dehumidifier, in uncooked rice or similar. If you try heating it, the moisture will be forced into somewhere hard to fix, ie, *in the screen.*

Follow these steps and it should be OK every time. As i said, i've dropped my Blackberry twice, and two other phones. It always works.

Hopefully this helps.

anon33585

My little brother dropped his phone in the toilet earlier today. He took it out and turned it on..Numbers popped up on the screen and his phone was vibrating and would go to the verizon wireless thing when it turned on.. He took it out and tried drying it on his shirt for only a min..Freaked out and came to me...I had a similar situation. So I took the battery off, shook it and dried the batter and phone.. I vacuumed the battery and phone to try and suck any extra moisture. Now the batter and phone are sitting in two separate bowls of uncooked rice.. Do you have any other advice as far as what to do? I plan on leaving it in the rice for two days... Do you think his phone will be OK? thank you so much. I really hope I can save his phone.

anon33575

i dropped my pantech slate into a puddle...it was in there for no more than 3 seconds but it was on and the fall caused the battery cover to fall off! i dried it off and my phones turns on and goes to the normal screen but none of the buttons work (except the button to turn it on but i can't even turn it back off with that..i have to pull out the battery).

anon33480

I just went swimming a my sisters party and i just jumped in remembering to take off my glasses and my hairband but i forgot to get the phone out of my pocket so i jumped in and i totally forgot about it until i accidentally hit the part of my leg where the pocket was and i felt it and i'm like Uh oh so i gave it to my sister to put on the table. i had no idea that i was supposed to take out the battery and let it dry and i was swimming for a *long* long time in the pool with it in my pocket. I was at the pool for about an hour. I tried to turn it on, but it didn't and i put it on the charger and the lights were turning on really bright and then dimmed until it turned off and it kept doing that. Then i took it off of the charger and then i put it on again and the screen turned white then i had to turn it off. The phone is useless. Now unless you guys can help me it won't even turn on now.

anon33463

omg i had my nokia xpressmusic and i was sitting down in the pool. i only got it a little bit wet and i think it must have been 45 seconds till i realized what happened. i turned it off and dried everything out. i vacuumed it then i put it in some rice. OK i am really scared because i love my phone to death and i can't live w/o it and i know my parents will be really mad so can yall tell me what to do from there?

summerlover

OK so i just thought i would tell you what happened to me... it was the last day of school (yesterday) and i got a text from my early bird friend, which woke me up. I read it and decided I had to go to the bathroom, so still half asleep i wandered toward the toilet. then, before i went to the bathroom, my mom called my name and i turned around which made my phone slip out of my hands and sent it flying into the toilet. It wasn't in there for more that 2 seconds, but it's old and cheap so the back popped off. I pulled it out and dried it off as well as i could, and let it sit the whole time i was at school.

Then when i came home i decided not to try it until later, but was really worried it might be permanently broken, and i am almost never home all summer so i was a little freaked. I went out on a bike ride with my friends from 5 until 10 and when i got home, i held my breath and hoped so hard... *and it turned on!* at first the 3 key wouldn't work but it's doing fine now, i'll write again if i find anything wrong with it.

anon33289

I dropped my phone in water just now, and for the most part it works, but the front screen does not work, and it can't find service anywhere!!! I just got it like 3 or 4 weeks ago and I can't wait the full 72 hours. My dad is getting back from his trip tonight! What should I do?

anon33058

So my LG Xenon was in my pocket, i sat down at the stairs of the pool and i just remembered my phone was in my back pocket of my shorts. My phone was in the water for no more than 3 seconds. I took my phone out of my pocket and it still worked regular but a few minutes after I took it out of the water my camera light came on and it started to vibrate. I took the battery out.

I just bought the phone like a week ago for like $314. I'm worried it might not work. It won't turn on and keeps vibrating and now the camera light won't go on anymore. *Anybody out there, please help me and tell me what to do!*

anon32651

I dropped my sony ericsson in the toilet two days ago. I immediately fished it out and turned it off, but I didn't try to dry it out until I got home. My best friend suggested putting the phone in the oven on the lowest possible setting for 5 min, but I blow-dried it and had it laying disassembled in front of a fan until now. I have tried the battery a couple of times and it vibrates and makes noise and that's all it does! Any help?

anon31104

Believe it or not i dropped my phone in a large creek about 3 feet deep. I could not find my phone and didn't find it for at least fifteen minutes. I took out the battery and put the phone and battery on concrete directly in the sun in a see through tub to contain heat. I later took out the battery again let it sit for a day hair dried it with no battery and it now works. I prayed to god and it's a miracle.

anon30582

My phone fell in a cup of water and I don't know how long it was in there. Is there anyway I can save this phone?

anon30096

C.L.R. it!! Seriously, take the phone apart so all you have is the pcb (comp chip) and submerse it in CLR for like 3 days. My Blackberry Curve was screwed and even the dealer couldn't do anything so I said, why not? I tried the CLR under my sink and after I dried it out for almost 3 weeks, I put a new battery in it and it started up like it used to! Unfortunately, I already spent another $500 on a new one.

anon28237

OK..i accidentally left my phone in my pocket and it went into the washing machine. i realized it only when the washing machine had stopped. so i tried to wipe it and stuff and my mum told me that I should let it charge for some time so that the heat will make the water evaporate. i did that for like 2 hours or so, but decided to stop. I tried to switch it on and it only worked once. at that time i tried pressing the call button and I heard it ringing which meant that the interior is working fine(i think) however, there is nothing on my display screen. my phone is a htc touch diamond. any suggestions pls? i got it just 4 months ago and it's so precious, everything is in there. help!!

anon28145

Well I have a phone that I just dropped in the toilet. Immediately I took it out and tried to use it. Nothing was working at all then I hung up on my friend who I was talking to and went here. Then I took the battery out, dried it completely, let it sit for a few moments then turned it on in my living room and set it away from me. When it was back on it worked fine. Thanks a lot for this website !!! :D [my phone has 58 mp3 files on it also, would of been very sad if I lost them all]

Clarimonde

My cellphone (a sony ericson [at&t]) fell into a glass filled with water just few minutes ago. I took it out as fast as I could. I turned it off and took out the battery. I dried it as much as i could and then let it dry under a light for a few minutes but my curiosity took over my sensible side and I tried to turn it on. The screen didn't work very well but it could vibrate and its sound was working fine.

Will my cell work ever? I need to know. I really don't want to buy another one....*please help*!!!

anon26997

OK so i was at school and i dropped my brand new at&t quickfire in the toilet. i pulled it out as fast as i could. my mom was so mad and so now it's drying out. i was wondering if there was anything i could do? that phone was my life, though i only texted. so yea, well anyway, HELP ME! =(

anon26789

I dropped my phone (behold) in the toilet and i quickly took off everything and dried it. I tried turning it on and it vibrated a little. So i took off the battery and i dried it with a fan for about 2days.

Do you think it will still work?

anon26588

OK I have a green LG rumor. I was texting while in the bathroom and it fell into the toilet. I screamed and then retrieved it. I turned it off immediately and took out the battery. I dried it off. I tried to blow dry it, but my uncle said it will fry the battery. I put the battery back in and turned it on.

The screen was gray and it would just vibrate. I took the battery out immediately and left it on the counter to dry.

Can I take it in and have the people not notice it was dropped in water or do I have to get a new phone? Or will it be fine?

anon26536

OK so i dropped my phone (Envy2) into the toilet like 15 mintues ago. I took the battery out and dried everything off and now it's just sitting out to dry.

I just dropped my phone in a bowl of water about an hour ago, its my brand new slider. Its Virgin Mobile, and was kind of expensive for my family. Any time i type on it it types 3 characters, currently i took out the battery opened the slide and laid it face down on top of my tv. Is there anything else i can do? I dropped my Blackberry Curve in the toilet and for those of you that have had water damage to a Curve, if you dry it off and let it sit out for a couple days, it will turn on and be fine. I left mine drying for about 2 days and then I charged it and its been working just fine.

I dropped my phone in water and I thought I got it out fast enough, however I'm pretty sure it turned off in the water... I did above steps, air dried it then tried to charge it but nothing would turn it on. Is there anything else I can do, or do I need a new battery??

i got a blackberry curve about a month ago. while i was washing dishes, i had my phone on the counter that was about five inches above the sink that i was washing dishes in. my phone was set on vibrate, and it was buzzing right over the ledge of the counter. without enough time for reaction, it fell into the sink filled with soapy water. before my blackberry hit the very bottom of the sink, i caught it, and immediately took the battery, SIM card, and memory card right out of it. i'm not sure where the water sticker is located or what it looks like, but i need help because this phone was very expensive and i really don't want to tell my mom what happened to it.

i have an lg rumour that i JUST dropped into a glass of water. i got the phone a week from friday so i can still send it in i think...but i dried off as much of the water as i could then put the battery back in and turned it on.

it worked like normal. i even sent a text. but then i noticed the screen was going all weird so i took out the batter and saw that there must've been water int he phone. i wiped that off then put the battery back in again and it worked but some of the buttons did things that they were or werent supposed to do. took out the battery and got rid of all the moisture that had appeared once again. turned it back on and now more buttons werent doing their right functions. now it s sitting out in the sun opened with the battery beside it. is there anything else i can do?

anon18718

anon18005

I was drinking coca cola and my cell phone was on the couch. I was texting when I accidentally dropped my phone into the glass! I did try to turn it out again, but now I know that's what not to do. It's been a day and it still isn't working. Is there any hope for my cell phone?!

anon17514

anon17284

So my son dropped my phone in the pool and I went to the bottom to get it and when i first looked at it there was nothing wrong with the screen or anything but i took the battery out and dried everything the best that I could and I put the battery back in and now it is saying emergency download mode does this mean that it is broken?

anon17187

lol when that happened to me, i just removed the water sticker on the battery and brought it in, they looked there first and said come back in a hour, came back and had a new phone free of charge.

my sidekick slide fell into the toilet, i took it out as soon as it fell but i didn't take the battery out until the phone shut off. what should i do??? i know i have to leave it and not try to turn it on for a couple days

anon16602

Well, I was at the ocean and we had to walk across a shallow part to this little island. So there was this big sand thing I had to go up and I slipped! It only got a little of my bag wet but of course the part that got wet was were my phone was! So it has been 2 days and it still doesn't work!

anon16479

all right, well the other day it was storming out and i had just got home. As im rushing out of my car i dropped my phone without knowing! Since my phone is always in use, i started looking for it in my purse. couldn't find it at all! soo i looked outside. And there it was in a big puddle, with rain falling on top of it. so i took off to get it outside. Since then its been sitting out for about two and half days. i finally put it all together and the screen stays completely white, everything lights up when you close the phone. On the little screen it shows the battery amount, and then a little airplane and beside it says "airplane mode"!! i don't know how to get rid of it! Especially when the screen is totally blank! the sound still works and it vibrates. its just the screen. So i honestly don't know what to do with this situation. im as of right now using a really lame old cellphone from the past, its very old school and I've already had enough of it. So please, help me out, what do i doooo?!

anon15793

the same goes for me, my phone wasn't completely underwater but it fell in the small drain space at the pool, you know the white space that's about 5 inches long?. I took it out no more then 2 seconds after but now the screens all weird. i can get some pictures but everything is in the negative colors. I can call and everything but as for saving it.. i don't think there's much else to do.

anon15528

I was at a pool party and I brought my sony walkman slider there, so my dad could call me if he needed me. I didn't drop it in water, it just got wet. and the screen is all weird, you can see but its different colors and stuff..The rest of the phone works. How do you fix the screen? I tried a blow drier suggestion from a friend, it didn't work well..the party was yesterday, but it's still like it was before, what should I do?

anon15382

i forgot my phone in my pocket of my swim suit and got into my pool at work. it was submerged for about 3-4 minutes... something tells me i am not going to save it. it was a brand new BlackBerry Curve (retails at over $400) please everyone, make sure your pockets are empty before entering a pool :(

anon14661

i dropped mine in the toilet while i was using it and now im waiting for it to dry and the inside of the screen is wet, any help?

anon14470

I dropped mine in the toilet and it kept working but now it's run out of battery and it won't turn on :(

anon14098

don't blow dry it - the air forces water deeper into the phone

anon13455

i left my phone out in the rain im trying to get it to work!

anon13388

Okay...so i dropped my cell into water, and it'll only turn on when its hooked up to the charger, and after so long if its not used, it'll shut itself off, would you say that's the phone itself, or the battery?

najm65

I dropped my blackjack in the toilet!! I immediately took the battery out and it was dry. However I beat the _ _ ss out of it. 2 hours later I replaced the battery and it's working. Go figure.

axelrose

i heard that you can put a damp cell phone in a bowl of rice and that helps absorb any residual moisture you can't get to with a towel. i've never had the opportunity to try this, but when you have a wet cell phone, you're probably desperate enough to try anything!

anon12901

i dropped it in water and i was at a river about 6 blocks from my home and as soon as i got home i blow dryed it and now whenever i turn it on it goes to the starting screen than the buttons light up than it starts all over...what should i do?

knittingpro

I've dropped two cell phones in water and one worked after and one didn't. The trick was to turn it off immediately, dry off all parts of it, take the battery out and dry that off, and let it sit for about 48 hours. Then it worked!
