A jellyfish tentacle can still sting even if it has been separated from the jellyfish’s body.  more...

April 22 ,  1889 :  The Oklahoma Land Rush began.  more...

There is a lot of history, nuance, and complexity to the issue, but, one of the primary reasons Pakistan was created was because of religion. The sprawling land mass that was colonial India under British rule was partitioned into three distinct places. Each one of these was created because the majority of its inhabitants worshiped one of two religions, Hinduism and Islam. This happened in 1947.

The independence movement in India began in earnest in the last half of the 19th Century. It then gained strength in the early part of the 20th century, as nationalism swept Asia and Africa as it had Europe a century before. Crusaders such as Mohandas Gandhi began campaigning for independence from Britain. The independence campaign gained international focus, thanks in large part to the actions of Gandhi and a few other brave people, and the pressure was finally too much for Britain to ignore.

India, however, was not just one country full of like-minded people when it came to worship. Two fundamentally different religions dominated the soulful landscape of the world's second most populous country. The conflict between followers of those two faiths transcended the partition from Colonial India into India and Pakistan. Hinduism, one of the world's oldest religions, had millions of adherents living in India. Islam did as well, though its history was much shorter.

Ad

The British partitioned Colonial India according to population concerns. India was then and continues to be populated mostly by Hindus. Pakistan, on the other hand, had and continues to have a mostly Muslim population. However, neither of these are homogeneous, and the partition separated many people from their families.

Much like the building of the Berlin Wall did, the partitioning of India created as many problems as it solved. India was a mostly Hindu country, yes, but it had a sizable Muslim minority. The same was true, in reverse, for Pakistan, which was actually two landscapes to begin with. In 1947, Pakistan was actually West Pakistan and East Pakistan, with India squarely in the middle. India divided both Pakistans without a way to connect the two. East Pakistan became Bangladesh in 1971.

The sudden division of the colony into two separate countries led to mass exodus. Muslims went to Pakistan and Hindus to India. Some estimates put the "population exchange" at more than 14 million. The exoduses led to mass chaos and hysteria, often accompanied by violence. In many cases, faith-based massacres occurred behind country lines.

Another huge point of sometimes violent debate between India and Pakistan has been the area between the two countries that is claimed by both countries. Part of this area, known as Kashmir, has been the site of a number of conflicts, and is one of the most militarized areas of territorial dispute, with areas controlled by Pakistan, India, and China. Conflicts over this region and on other serious issues have led to an escalating arms race between India and Pakistan, with both sides claiming to have nuclear weapons.

What happened doesn't matter, but why it happened matters. Muslims were suppressed by Hindus and the British. They were always neglected. Muslims were living below the poverty line so that they wanted to get up. They wanted to come out of this darkness. They wanted to be move on so that they struggled to get a new homeland.

Mughal rule up to British times? Ha Ha. Is this daydreaming by the self-masking "indus" historians too? After Aurangjeb, Delhi and other sultans were merely stooges of Marhattas. Marhattas went all the way to Panipath to fight Afghan Durranies to save India. Delhi? Sacked by Nadir Shah of Iran!

If anything, during the interregnum, the Marhattas and Shikhs were having substantial influence on ruling India as large powers. The British took that away. The Sepoy mutiny propped up the last Mughal king only as a symbolic and unitarian gesture -- the message of which obviously was lost on the creators of Pakistan. It is purely a clash of civilizations.

Indians of all faiths have gone along with modern times and founded a modern state. In contrast, Pakistanis want to go back to medieval times, and yes, whether they are western educated or madras educated. This is the sad and bad truth.

Pakistan is a failed idea. A country that was created in the name of a religion as Utopia lost its reason for existence when millions of Muslims of India did not want to move to the new invented country right at the bloody beginning when millions died as a result of forced migration.

The credibility of them being a Muslim nation was completely lost when the West Bengal Pakistanis rejected the idea and became Bangladesh. Pakistan has occupied Baluchistan and Kashmir by force, and has been the instigator of Islamic extremism and supporter of Osama Bin Laden.

Now whatever the truth, we are happy that Pakistan is separated from India. We thank Gandhi and Jinnah for this because of the current situation in Pakistan. Ask a Pakistani national how terrible life in Pakistan is now. So God is great and we are safe, at least in that case.

Like others have said, Jinnah was a secular man. He wasn't so much creating Pakistan for Islam or it's values, but rather for the people who coincidentally followed Islam, and happened to be a minority who would appear to be repressed in having any political say in the Hindu-dominated Indian Congress.

In regards to Kashmir, the Maharaja was a Hindu, while the majority of the population were Muslim. Why should India have Kashmir when it is contrary to the views of its people? Personally, I don't think Kashmir is worth spilling blood over. It should be independent, but neither party will allow that. After all, is India not the self-proclaimed "World's Largest Democracy"? Surely then it should allow a plebiscite and respect the wills of the people? Mind you, India did annex Hyderabad, which proclaimed its independence in Operation Polo, as well as parts of Gujarat which wanted to stand with Pakistan. Unity at any cost? At the cost of the will of the people? Is this democracy?

The deranged political personalities of both nations and their governments have created stupid hate. Two nations should work together as friends. This would be beneficial to Pak and its ailing economy and would also help strengthen Indian growth.

Pakistan itself is a broken nation with separatist movements and terrorism, as well as widespread corruption and deceit. The old colonial system has merely been replaced by the wealthy land-owning classes and their repression of the poor and working class. India is also the victim of much hatred and enmity internally, from Maoists, Khalistanis etc.

Alas, after many wars, many lives wasted and many strong words thrown around, it is unlikely any true peace will exist. A Cold Peace if anything.

Pakistan is the name we give it today. We are the people of The Indus and today our cherished faith is Islam. We have been the gateway to the east and part of every great empire. Our destiny is greater Khorasan.

Indians (South Asians) are a different people from the people of The Indus by language, by ethnicity by culture and geography.

The Maharaja Hari Singh was not the legitimate ruler of Kashmir, but a successor of a legacy of betrayal and oppression. The Dogras, to whom Hari Singh belonged, were bandits, tyrants and loyal foot soldiers allied with the British to crush opposition to British Occupation.

For their loyalty, Kashmir was sold to the tyrant Dograst in the late eighteenth century. The Dogras illegally occupied Kashmir as India does today.

Anyone wishing to study Kashmiris will see they differ by ethnicity, by geogrpahy, by language, by culture, by faith, and by history, but are tied to the rest of The Indus known today as Pakistan.

We Kashmriis have more in common with Pakistan and Central Asia then we have with the civilisation of the Ganges.

There was no such thing as India before the British arrived on the Bay of Bengal to destroy the remnants of the great Asian Empire: the Mughal Islamic Empire.

The British used divide and conquer by aiding the Hindus against the remnants of the Mughal Empire and state by state soon fell to the British as Protectorates.

There was never an India, but only a conglomerate of many nations and thousands of distinct languages, cultures and religions.

East of The Indus was the land of Hind -- a Persian name to describe the indigenous "darker" inhabitants west of the Indus. They were and still are a different people. Part of every empire since the dawn of civilisation came from the Indus Valley, and every Central Asian Empire, including the Persian from Kashmir to Karachi and much of what is India, Punjab, Rajasthan. The Mughal Empire crossed the Indus deep into Hind controlling a third of the territory all the way to Burma.

Pakistan was created because the British had a policy to deprive the Muslims of their language (Urdu), and deprived them of the education of two centuries, which left them at the peril of Hindus. In the 1920s, the Hindu Shruti campaign forcibly converted up to 2 million Muslims to Hinduism and it was known to everyone that the British were removing Muslims and replacing them with Hindus and the British empire in this region known as India would fall to Hindu mob rule. In over two centuries the elite class and educated ruling class were now demonised and persecuted in their homeland by a British-Hindu Alliance.

Even Gandhi laughed in the face of Jinnah and said even in democracy the Hindu will rule over India and Muslims will be the minority community. Hindus were 3:1 and Gandhi failed to recognise India for Indians, but separated across religions even though he was an advocate of unity. Muslim congress members were displaced and Jinnah's call for a united India, regardless of religion, fell on deaf ears.

Years later, Allama Iqbal brought Jinnah back to lead the deprived Muslims to reclaim their heritage and land and restore their identity as the heirs of the Mughal Empire.

Kashmir, by geography, ethnicity, culture, language and faith is more closely linked to central Asia and Pakistan than India.

The powers that be enjoy the status quo in this region to play their games. Pakistan is the name we call our nation today. It was Muhalistan yesterday and has been part of every Central Asian Islamic empire, but it was also Persian and was the Indus Valley civilisation. India as a united nation came to be in 1948, but before the British, this was Hind or Baarat: a region of many nations.

We reclaimed our land and India finally found unity even by force, forcibly including Assam into the Indian Union, along with Hyderabad, Tamil Nadu, etc. This is why the separatist movements in India are the greatest in the world because it is a conglomerate of many nations, cultures, languages and faiths where a minority Hindu elite rule over the masses.

Churchill said it correctly: India is no more a nation than the equator.

Here are the facts. Pakistan was created based on religion. It was the two-nation theory that Muslims would not get fair treatment in India.

However, the two nation theory was blasted when Bangladesh was formed in 1971, despite having the same religion. The Pakis were subjecting Bengalis to genocide, however, with India's help and Indira Gandhi's smart moves and Field Marshall Manekshaw's brilliant planning India was able to help Bangladesh gain independence.

The Kashmir story was well written earlier. One of the writers which briefly was that Maharaja Hari Singh (ruled Kashmir for 300 yeas) had thoughts of an independent Kashmir, however, given that the majority of the people (65 percent) were Muslims, Pakistan sent mountain brigades and tribes into Kashmir to capture it. The Paki soldiers came in hiding behind the tribesmen. India was asked by Hari Singh to intervene and he sighed the instrument of accession which lies in Delhi Museum, so India intervened and rest is history as the biggest mistake was for Nehru to go to the UN when India could have recaptured all of Kashmir. Anyway, it is what it is today. So we have J&K, while Pakistan has Azad Kashmir. Of course, we kept two-thirds and the more beautiful part.

Now fast forward to 2012. India is on its way to become one of the major powers of the world by 2025. Its economy will be the third largest in actual terms by 2025, and militarily will have the third highest spending and rank as well. Education, science and technology are the primary focus for India's progress. Further, $150 billion of infrastructural development has been planned immediately. India today has more billionaires than either Russia or China and their net worth is over $300 billion! India is only second to the USA in producing scientists and engineers.

Indians have the highest per household income, even higher than immigrants in the USA, UK and Canada. India, because of its people's success, has greater soft influencing power than China.

I could keep going on about India's success, but since we are a democratic country I should say we have many issues to tackle as well, e.g., corruption at all levels. Politicians, especially, need to build infrastructure immediately, and improve basic civic facilities, like hospitals, etc. Our country has a great future, however we are going through a transition like any great power. Even America went through this.

Pakistan, however is considered 12th on the list of failed countries. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya were the countries to recognize the Taliban in Afghanistan! Today it's getting eaten by its own terrorism which it tried to use in J&K. I have nothing more to add. May god save them.

Given that all Pakistanis were Hindus or Buddhists at one point in time, especially if you think about the greatest Emperor of all – Ashoka – whose empire stretched from Burma to Afghanistan in west and from Himalaya to south India, he built the Bamiyan statues which were destroyed by the Paki-led Taliban. I think kids should think about joining the Mahabharata for their salvation and future. Think about the economic opportunity the business community will have! Join us and have a great future.

Understand the philosophy of Pakistan is that the country was made for Muslims only. Being a Pakistani and a Muslim I have a question. Where in Islam it is mentioned that Muslims should have a separate land? Nowhere. Rather, the basic fundamental principle of Islam is Dawahh, which means "invite people and preach Islam in a moderate and polite manner." So, if we Pakistanis draw a line around us, calling it a Muslim land, this is, in fact, a contradiction of Islamic values.

Our Prophet Muhammad (may Peace be Upon Him) always delivered the message of peace and humanity. My question is that with great respect to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, a person who was indeed a great leader, and we must respect him for giving us the land Pakistan. However, we must not forget he was a secular leader, and incidentally, he never had much acquaintance even with Islam.

With great respect to him but if you see his family photos of 1902, you will be surprised that he was a highly western influenced personality and far away from the basic practice of Islam. So let's not get confused. He was a man of principle, he was a learned personality, he was our leader and we must pay him great respect as a leader, but not as a Muslim scholar for God's sake.

I guess the time has proved that Pakistan was based on wrong ideas and since Muslim folks remained unaware of the importance of education, the Hindu folks ruled them with their calculated life and then Muslims started complaining that their rights were trampled by Hindus.

There is a proverb, "If you complain, people walk over you, then it is you who has compromised to become a foot mat," and traditionally people walk over a foot mat.

So we Muslims and Pakistanis must understand, unnecessary hatred of India will not earn us anything, but will waste our time. We must understand if we tighten the noose around our army's neck, which is the biggest looter of our budget and mints money from the nation under the pretext of defense, then only we will move towards prosperity.

Corrupt governments prosper under the umbrella of our army and it is no one but our army which has to be controlled and bilateral negotiations will play a significant role in easing tensions between the two countries and cuts to defense budgets will yield money for the education of our children.

However, there are two communities who will die with hunger due to a good relationship with India and that is the army and the filthy politicians. The army will have no excuse to skim money from the nation for its budget and the politicians will have no way of making money to allot permits for food to be imported from countries like Turkey and China as we can get cheap and economical food stuff from India, provided we shut the defense channel.

Congress was the biggest political party to represent all Indians to British invaders. However, the party was dominated by Hindus, who worship statues made by their own hands. They wanted to occupy all the resources after britain's, while sabotaging Muslim rights.

They wanted to make muslims their financial slaves, to get revenge from muslims, who ruled India for centuries and people being oppressed, converted their religion from Hinduism to Islam. Gandhi was a Hindu. Jinnah was a muslim. Both were most effective and superior leaders. Jinnah being disappointed by congress, stopped advocating a united India after the British left the region.

So he, bowing to the demands of the muslim leaders at that time, finally decided to create a separate muslim country to make a model islamic welfare state. And within seven years of the decision, they succeeded, in spite of all the opposition of Gandhi, Nehru and all the powerful Hindu leaders. Congress couldn't stop that creation and decided to create every possible hurdle against the existence of Pakistan.

Some Hindu fundamentalists have the aim to kill as many Muslims as possible. They backed the Sikhs to start massacres of Muslims and riots started, also backed by some Hindus.

The British created issue of Kashmir to keep both countries fighting forever to control China's ever growing power (this strategy was backed by the USA).

India invaded Kashmir and when they lost control of the Muslims of Kashmir and Pakistan, went to the United Nations and made a promise to have plebiscite in Kashmir, which has never been met and the USA backed the UN and never tried to enforce implementation of its resolution. This is because the Kashmiris and Pakistanis are Muslims.

Pakistan was created by the division of east and west Pakistan, and was separated by India's years of destabilizing efforts and Pakistani dictatorship, while creating Bangladesh.

There is but only one religion - humanity. As Ghandi said "I am Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Hindu.." and I live by that philosophy. If there is a creator, which I believe there is, then religion would be something that the creator would prefer never existed - if it is to remain a divisive force. I believe religion should be forever removed from humanity - no more religion. A set of universal human laws established - with everyone brothers and sisters.

Religion is the single greatest divider in this world and brings more harm than good. I have no religion. I am a human being. We are all the same.

Religion adds no value to us that good parents and good human beings with good intentions cannot add. End religion.

Pakistan was created by a handful of power hungry politicians who had not consideration for the good of the people or the country. These "great" men only had personal glory and recognition at heart. Naturally, the colonial powers did everything in their power to encourage such selfish behaviour. The losers are the masses of people living in this land. They are still struggling to get basic necessities, while the powerful and corrupt elite live like Maharajas.

And what's with dragging up the past? Why do people do that? At the end of the day, pakistan and india are separated now, so what's the point of talking -- or shall i say arguing -- about something that has happened for the best? Both countries can follow their religion without any problems.

First of all, india is jealous of nothing. In fact, pakistan is jealous of india. The Maharaja of Kashmir wanted independence but a revolution by muslims in the western part of the kingdom and the incursion of tribesmen from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa made him appeal for help from India.

The tribesmen were sent in but British General Douglas Gracey of Pakistani army refused to follow orders from Muhammad Ali Jinnah to attack Kashmir.

The tribesmen were equipped with light tanks and were almost at the doorsteps of Srinagar before Indian army stopped them. Thereafter, maharaja hari singh took assistance for india, and for that, the indian government have argued for assistance the state would accede with india.

Thereafter the maharaja hari singh signed the instrument of accession to indian union on 26th october 1947. After this accession, a formal letter was also signed by lord Mountbatten on October 27 1947, making Jammu and Kashmir an integral part of India even as Indian forces were airlifted to Srinagar.

Jawaharlal Nehru, then Prime Minister of India, asked the UN to intervene. The United Nations passed the United Nations Security Council Resolution 47 asking Pakistan to withdraw all its forces from Kashmir. This was to be followed by a plebiscite to determine the wishes of people of the entire state of Kashmir. However the required withdrawal never happened.

The area which remained under the control of Pakistan is called Pakistan-administered Kashmir(pakistan occupied kashmir in indian history).

This is the truth of the Kashmirs: i.e., kashmir is legally a part of india..

As for Kashmir, that is a controversy and no pakistani and indian can ever or should claim that the land was originally theirs. As for India being jealous of pakistan. of what? as of now india has a better economy than pakistan.

anon121864
Post 18

Actually Anon 25614, Pakistan was created for religious purposes. There were more problems, but this was the main problem.

I'd like to point out something.'Hinduism, one of the world's oldest religions, had millions of adherents living in India. Islam did as well, though its history was much shorter.' Does this mean that overall, Islam was newer than Hinduism? If yes, it is wrong.

Islam is older than Hinduism, by far, no negative thinking, please!

I'd also like to point out that 'the language' was not the main reason for the dispute between East and West Pakistan (or Bangladesh and Pakistan). The real reasons were for the sources East Pakistan was getting. West Pakistan (Bangladesh) felt that it was wrong and unfair (they also had limited water sources). India, took advantage of the fact that East Pakistanis had better sources and lured West Pakistanis to gain their independence. I am not saying that claiming independence is wrong, what I am saying is that the way India thought was wrong.

The main reason India went into Pakistan's business was because it was jealous of the land Pakistan had received, and therefore, wanted Pakistanis to get less. Just like Kashmir.

Kashmirs were killed by Indians. I'll say Muslim Kashmirs were. This is because when the British were dividing the land of India and Pakistan (which the British left for India since it used all the land, resources etc.), they left Kashmir (or something along those lines) for Pakistan. This was because the Muslim population was more in Kashmir than the Hindu population in Kashmir.

So, the Indians made a plan to eliminate a chunk of the Muslim population, so they could receive the land. That failed, obviously, since Pakistan wasn't dumb to not do anything.

My opinion is that India still wants Pakistan to fall so they can receive the land of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Kashmir combined. That is a lot of land.

If India were to bomb Pakistan a few months back, this plan might have succeeded, since Pakistan was (and still is) suffering from a very bad flood.

It is all due to the politicians of Pakistan, who only care about money and not their country (who use their money for watches and limos but not for dams to cover for emergencies such as floods).

India was and even today is sub-continent. In this sub-continent from the beginning hold two civilization. One called Sindu (or Abaseen or Sindh), people who lives on the bank of River Sindh. Second called Hindu, people who lives on the bank of River Ganga and Jamna.

From the beginning sub-continent was divided into different countries. The people of theses countries speak different languages such as, Sindhi, Punjabi, Baluchi, Sanskrit, Gujarati, Bengali, Hind-co, Marathi and etc.

They have different cousins. They have entirely different culture. Even today more then 100 groups in different part of India are fighting and trying to get Independence from India. They are not Muslim indeed they are Hidues and belong different religion

Mughal Empire Concorde most of the part of sub-continent and try to develop new country under the name of Hindustan OK.

The people of Pakistan basically are the ruler of the India. The British killed all the Royal Family. Please be noted that British did not killed only Royal family but also all the scholars, burn all the educational institutes just only to stop and to kill civilization. Later on they support Hindu High Class.

Please be noted that Hindus are divided into different classes and according to the Hindu religion Barhamans are the son of God they are superior, Rajput are the warrior of the God, like this they divided and make different classes (Even today you can watch same issues in Indian Movies). After above mentioned these two classes rest of the Hindues and other religion are slave they are not allowed to do any respectful job or occupation, they were are even today humiliated.

Muslims in India was not allowed to attend any School or Colleges. Muslims Schools and Colleges was banned by British, they were not allowed to do any government job they were not allowed to do business. They can do only low category jobs. Later on British allowed Muslim to do government job, but you told me without having education how can they do jobs?.

If any part of India Muslims establish business Hindues attacked on business places and burn them.

Due to these reasons Muslim of India demand for separate Country.

Even today Pakistan do not want Punjab. Kashmir Kashmir and only Kashmir is the only dispute between India and Pakistan. According to the passed resolution from Indian Assembly and approved by the East India Company (British) Muslim populated area were allowed to join Pakistan. The majority of Kashmir are Muslim more then 80% they want to join Pakistan but in 1947 India by military action occupied Kashmir and not obeying UN resolution to do election.
